I do too, and I think that methodology in doing that has to be taken into account. The aggressiveness of pushing 'this is better than that OK??!?' just turns people off in my opinion and experience, it's divisive.

If you can't recognise that is happening from the reaction you are getting from Windows (and linux) users not sure what else to say.

I'm into gaming on all platforms. Got a gaming PC, to go alongside my PS3 (got a Wii too), but I was never motivated to get an XBox 360.

Mate, I think you'll find the venom has mostly been directed my way. Eg "Just STFU" was offered in one case. Not sure I care whether people are offended by robust opinion on a discussion forum, but can't seem to recall getting personal. I think my points have been a bit more thoughtful than "mine is better than yours", but so be it, you seem to have taken on the role of mediator for whatever reason (fucking fence sitter)

Understand the off-topic aspect, which is why I started a new thread.

As I said, best tool for the person, with the job they have before them. For many people that is simply not Linux ... yet.

You ignore the fact people have told you, eg: protium, that software for testing specific types of electronics in his case does not exist.

Where is the fence if Linux cannot do it? You want him to try programming an interface in C?

Some of us Windows users who ask Windows specific questions are actually quite fed up with people barging in and spouting "Just switch to Linux dude!" just like people like me who still use Windows NT Workstation 4.0 (my desktop) are fed up with those barging in suggesting "You need to upgrade dude!" and "Get a mac dude!" every time we ask a question.

Perhaps there is a reason we are not able to switch operating systems? Perhaps there are applications that we have to use on Windows that cannot be found elsewhere? Proprietary and discontinued apps I have that are 16-bit apps?

I can understand why someone would go "Just STFU" in response to that sort of thing then.

As davo has mentioned a number of times, it depends on the best tool for the job. I've NEVER had a virus that I know of for over six years of Windows usage now. In fact since Windows XP Service Pack 2 came out, and since I downgraded to NT 4.0 and since I upgraded the laptop to Windows 7 x64 things have got a lot better in that area.

I sometimes wonder if this "GNU/Linux" thing is becoming like a religion or cult.

And it was in context please ... In regard when an obvious windows question is asked, people drop 'linux' and then can't understand why people get turned off, and fight it to the death over how they are 'educating people'

The OP in fact and I had a long discussion in regards Linux and the GIS databases he uses, they are major with major requirements in regard imagery. He also pointed out the only unix versions able to do it require lots of money he doesn't have and specific hardware. He is asking about security recommendations for the only tool he has to do the job before him
