I use trend and it is pretty good. Problem with most security suites though is they won't pick up malware. Got malware bytes installed and it doesn't conflict with anti virus software.

Nothing serious. Fully featured GIS and image databasing solutions first (I mean a real one not something like that Picassa shit) and we'll sort out the rest later.

Try Virtualbox.

Most of the software you probably class as essential has a decent Linux replacement (or a compatible build). If not in the cloud. I've been using Open/Libre office exclusively with no problem.

By all means get hold of a copy of GRASS and attempt to do some real work with it, good luck.

That blog doesn't mention it but ESRI's top of the range product is UNIX based and extremely powerful, also extremely expensive (I don't own a sun SPARC either).

I do know people who have got useful GIS applications going in linux, but you need to be the sort of person who is happy to spend an inordinate amount of time fiddling. I don't enjoy that sort of challenge.

For the people recommending MSE: does that have a decent firewall? I tried it a few months ago and it definitely didn't have a firewall.

As for security suites: I use ESET Smart Security - had I much of a choice I'd probably dump the antivirus bit and keep the firewall and use MSE for AV protection.

@Black: what about running applications in WINE though?

True Windows does have a firewall, but the problem is that it cannot notify you of an application that's attempting to access a port or anything like that; it only does this for inbound connection attempts. In addition ESET will tell you if an application has been modified, and whether or not to keep allowing it through the firewall. If they implement all that I'm dumping ESET for sure.

I have both enabled because as far as I understand, the Windows firewall will be started before the network stack is loaded. And I notice no noticeable (network) performance penalties by doing this either.

About an antivirus product having a firewall; it doesn't help much that they call it "Microsoft Security Essentials" instead of "Microsoft Antivirus" or something; "Security Essentials" implies more of a suite than a stand-alone antivirus.

I have all my CPU's working just on dynamic iptables rulesets to block possible fundy infiltration of my home network.

It even controls how many requests the teenagers can make to the internet a day.
