*curtseys*

Just wondering who would be in a position to conduct/sponsor such a poll.

We could also just attach one of those infamous online polls to the web page, saying its a demonstration of how the question should be asked. The problem, of course, will be things like ACL spam bots.

not to mention obvious selectivity, which was the point of my initial comment.

Just approach one of the big pollsters and when they refuse try to make some news of it

Seriously, surely some funds could be rounded up from the squillion secular and atheist groups in Oz, throw in a few volunteers and badabing. Just copy the questions from the British poll and the Oz census form. Its not like you have to get all that many people to respond, just enough to get a friendly journalist to write "australians: not as religious as you think". I really have no idea how hard it would be.

Just need a reputable pollster, a big enough sample of the population, and a well designed poll to make that poll of that sample a statistically relevant one.

OK, so who do we have to fuck to get it done?

I think that in all seriousness, this is something I'd like to get involved in, but I guess someone somewhere is more on the ball than me. Probably the AFA has already organised a poll or some such.

The poll in the UK was run by Mark Cuthbert on behalf of the Humanist Society of Scotland. Mark worked for Progressive Partnership until feb 2010 - he has a linkedin account but doesn't look that up to date. He might have some tips.

Apart from Roy Morgan and Neilsen, there is also ANU Polls

Found this hot off the press - http://publicpolicy.anu.edu.au/anupo...l_internet.pdf

Quote:
Could you please tell me whether you are a member of the
following voluntary organisations or if you have participated in
its activities in the last 12 months?

A religious organisation

.............................................. Number ....... Per cent
yes - member (only) ....................... 40 ............. 3.3
yes - participated (only) ................. 82 ............. 6.8
yes - both member & participated ... 128 ............ 10.6
Neither ..................................... 950 ............ 79.2
Don’t know ......................................1 .............. 0.1

Total ........................................ 1200 ........... 100.0

Another Poll looking at public attitudes about science found

Quote:
Australians are more interested in science than sport and feel that politicians are failing to listen to the advice of the nation’s scientists,

Other key findings from ANU Poll include:
Quote:
Australians believe that scientists, doctors, engineers, teachers, police and the military make a significant contribution to society, but are less positive about priests, politicians and journalists;

ANU Polls methodology

Quote:
The survey is conducted by phone by the Social Research Centre (SRC), Melbourne. ....

The sample size of 1,000 allows for a margin of error of about plus or minus 3 per cent (±3%).

Method
Potential participants are contacted at random by telephone using a technique called random digit dialling (RDD) ....

I find that poll about science particularly heartening, RR.
