Delivering the annual Alfred Deakin lecture in Melbourne last night, the Opposition Leader said the philosophy behind the [community-controlled public] schools proposal was the same as that which drove the Coalition's health policy of hospitals controlled by community boards.

"There is no cure-all for the problems of public schools and public hospitals, which will always have to juggle limited funds against virtually unlimited potential demand for services, but making decision-makers accountable to local boards would help,'' he said.

''School principals accountable to parent bodies would be less susceptible to educational fads. Hospital CEOs accountable to local communities would be as concerned about delivering services as about meeting budget.''

The British Prime Minister, David Cameron, whom Mr Abbott recently met, is an advocate of community-controlled state schools.

The only reason public schools have limited funds is because of govt controlled spending, especially as we saw under his Coalition govt.

He ought to justify the propositon there is "virtually unlimited potential demand for services". Where?

This ploy would diminish education standards, and allow religious schools to prosper under the umbrella of public education.
