Handy reference to major religions, superstition, folklore etc. is the Internet Sacred Text Archive
It's not preachy about anything, just presents the texts as references. The contents of the site can also be purchased on disc, quite cheaply, which I have done. When "knowing the enemy", having several versions of the Bibles is handy.

Misquoting Jesus - Bart Ehrman.
- Written for the layman, gives a great understanding of just what the Bible is and the processes involved in compiling the Bible along with the problems through the process of compilation - Like stories being added, mistakes etc.

Bart Ehrman's latest - Jesus Interrupted: Revealing the Hidden contradictions in the Bible - is pretty good, too.

The Missionary Position - Christopher Hitchins. Not as saucy as it sounds - it's a criticism of Mother Theresa and the cult that has sprung up around her. Just finished reading it, and Hitch was in fine form (but I expected no less).

So i've heard - It's waiting on my bookshelf for me after i finish Misquoting jesus.

On my bookshelf i also have waiting tenderly:
A Briefer History of Time - Hawking
The Grand Design Hawking
The Lost Scriptures Bart Ehrman

And in the mail... (I do hope they are good)
The Selfish Gene.
The Blind Watchmaker
The Greatest Show on Earth
- All 3 of which are of course by Dawkins

And also in the mail The Portable Atheist Compiled by Christopher Hitchens

Must be some evil Atheist conspiracy to use books starting with 'THE'

Fearless, might I add a recommendation for the Blogs section?

There is one which I was following for a while called Goosing the Antithesis which is full of resources. For the word hungry this is more than your average smörgåsbord too.

Two discussion forums which provide some good insights

Also have a link to a public access show in the US which brings forward many differing viewpoints

Enjoy!
