If THAT is a "republic", bring it on!

Ha, always know I can rely on you to think outside the square, Mr P.

Again, I'm stupid. Wow I didn't realise not voting for a political system I didn't want made me stupid. Perhaps it was the powers that be that were stupid for using the referendum format that they did.

Before anyone else gets their knickers in a knot, may I refer back to my first post in this thread in which I said

My reference at that time was to the fact we did not have a republic on the basis of what I considered ill-informed criticism of the model, commonly based on a lack of understanding of the Constitutional role and the fact that role should have no new mandate.

Given there were no practical flaws in the proposal for neutrality and competence of appointment, the fact that I personally was keen on a republic, and that this was in opposition to J Howard*, I considered that pro-republicans voting against it were simply shooting themselves in the foot, hence my use of the term "Campaign for Stupid" and one reference back to that in a later post.

The path now intended, agree we should have one then work out the actual constitutional model, a path of which I am perfectly aware, may produce popular election or may not. Either way, I have seen little if any evidence of understanding of constitutional or governance implications of different models in most of the posts above.

* A cartoon I greatly enjoyed appeared in the mid 90s, after Howard had spent I think it was more than a week in hospital for a complaint which required proper rest but otherwise left him conscious and clear. The cartoon showed Costello and Howard on the hospital steps, Howard in dressing gown. The conversation in the cartoon goes:
Howard: "Y'know, all that time on your back, it gives you time to think."
Costello [expectantly]: "So...?"
Howard: "So what??"

I am suggesting that the powers of the GG remain as they are currently, even under a republic.
Please remember the GG is NOT the head of state,he represents the queen. His/her constitutional power is derived directly from the queen. In a republic his powers would need to be redfined.

What people think they are voting for is irrelevant. The elected governments in this countrty demonstrate that with monotonous regularity. I'm also unconvinced that the Australian elctorate is as stupid as you seem to think.

Having a GG with current powers means the appointed holder of the office would retain the power to dismiss parliament. The last time that happened was in 1975. I will never support the notion of an appointed head of state unless the role is purely ceremonial.

IF Gillard is as cunning and devious as I think, she may introduce a referendum on a republic if she is relected. I think it would pass if worded properly, giving people a simple ,clear choice.

Wow, had I actually attmempted to post in that time I might have even noticed.

You won't have to worry about me posting here again. Not for reasons of what you don't find acceptable, but rather, what you do.

Just bring it on, I despise an inherited head of state,

I would challenge each and everyone of you that say know to a republic that you have double standards. Why, because if you had nepotism in the local tennis club, golf club, social club, local council, school council, etc etc, you would be crying blue murder.

Sorry for the out cry!

WTF is a Contract with Creation and when did I sign it?

I really wish they'd make this issue more transparent, and separate us into the three groups we actually are:
Republicans;
Monarchists; and
Status Quoists.

I suspect the non-Republican camp contains many more of the latter than the former.

Their motto could be, "Better to die on my feet than live on my knees, unless it costs too much money and it's not so bad on my knees."

eksighted, perhaps.

Blame it on spelling checker disease. In the last six months we have often encountered advertising for properties which are "sort after" while the number of sports people who have not been blasted with a ray gun (or phased) never ceases to amaze me, although it still fazes me a little.

However, Woolworths has no such excuse for advertising on shelf shreddard wheat biscuits.
