The current one would not have to be changed Quake. It might stay the same when Aus does become a republic. I would prefer to see the state governments disbanded and the federation star removed from the flag (the big one under the union jack). As you can see, I've toyed with having the Aborigine flag in the federation star's place... but I can't see a consensus being reached on what would actually replace it.

Might have to move this if it goes too far off topic, but Threat, why do you want the states disbanded?

As for flags, who knows. I do agree with Mr. Black though.
About the union jack.

I have heard arguments against the southern cross being in the flag. It seemed to pivot on the fact that the southern cross isn't really that significant as it is seen from the southern hemisphere. But the counter point is that it is culturally significant.

Unfortunately after the rubbish in Cronulla the southern cross seems to have become synonomous with racism. The people I meet who sport it as a tattoo or on the back window of their car have invariably been racist baffoons. Let's not forget that it is also only culturally significant because the first fellows to see saw that it had a striking resemblance to that thing their boy Jeebus likes to hang around on...

Perhaps the conversion to a republic will allow us an opportunity to design something considerate of the native people and more indicative of our secular, multicultural ideology.

Good point, it is (the southern cross) starting to remind myself of the symbology of the confederate flag (the battle one, or the stainless banner I think it was called)

The thing is, I wouldn't be surprised if there are Australian citizens out there that think it is purely visible from Australia......

I enjoy prodding southern cross branded folks with "Why do you have that as a tattoo, are you samoan?"

It has amazed me how often the visibility of the constellation from other countries is news to such people...

On clear nights you could ask them to point out the constellation. Other times you could ask them to point to where they would expect it to be. Wonder how many would fail.
Does anyone on the forum have a Southern Cross tatt?

Would anyone be prepared to admit it after the amount of a sledging it has been given?

I've had the same argument with other people who have tried to state that the Southern Cross should appear on any future flag. It is amazing as you said, how many people are surprised that it is visible to any country in the Southern Hemisphere.
