Default Creationist

A definition that I found this morning, from Mark Dapin's book "Fridge Magnets are Bastards." Thought I'd share:

creationist

noun, 1. idiot

Creationists believe God created the world in six days, and Adam and Eve lived in the Garden of Eden until Eve was persuaded by a snake to eat an apple, whereupon the First Couple were packed off to this vale of tears.

The problem with this story is that in modern times snakes do not have the power of speech. People who scoff at the idea of evolution, and think it ridiculous that monkeys might have grown into men, nonetheless accept that reptiles have gone through a kind of reverse evolutionary transformation from intelligent, loquacious, seductive beings into the mute repulsive coils of mouse-eating garden hose they are today.

God made two very bad mistakes when he created the world

1/ Made a talking snake
2/ Made me an Atheist

Devil's advocate replies;

There was no talking snake in Eden. The serpent in question was the Devil who had taken the form of a snake.

Genesis makes no mention of the kind of fruit.

Tangent Trivia:

Eve and many others are often portrayed wearing only fig leaf and a smile. Why a fig leaf? The tradition began in Italy. It's a visual pun. The word for 'fig' in Italian is 'fica'. It is also centuries old slang for 'vulva'.I have no idea if this claim is true.If not it should be.

Did you know that somewhere in the bowels of The Vatican there is a large chest full of marble penises? (peni?) About 150 years ago,the incumbent senile geriatric warming the throne of St Peter went around with a hammer and chisel and removed the penis from every statue in the Vatican.--and that IS true

Mark Dapin would surely be immensely gratified to know that more than one person has a copy of that book - we have it too

I like his take on things.

So if it wasn't an apple, which other fruit carries the knowledge of good and evil with it?

Also God punishes the snake by making it have to move around on its belly, how did it move, and is this snake breaking God's Will?

Reminds me of a conversation I had with an ID/Creo 'spokesperson' not too long ago. It degenerated to the point of ". . . and the Biblw makes no mention of an apple - so there - what do you know? . . ."

To explain why it is commonly perceived to be the apple as being the culprit, I was about to offer the image of a cut apple to him - (and potentially describe the name I was about to call him . . . on stage . . . heavily amplified . . . ), when he interupted my retort with:

"For all we will ever know, it could just as easily have been a pineapple or peanut tree . . ."

True story - and he said it in all sincerity - in the same tone that he uses when he recites his scripture!

Typical red herring! It was never an apple but was always a herring!
Actually my dad insisted it was a pear, so that makes it all OK! Hello!

DBK I have to say love your quote I am a huge fan of Douglas Adams.

But really no one in their right mind could even think this as even true at all It just baffles me anyone who actually really belives this.

It is a bizzare story from some person on some pretty wacky drugs..

It is hard to not think of people who support religion as being affected at times by some mental illness not just mind control

While some authors call it delusion, in my experience ID/Creationism is largely founded on willful self-deception. Something akin to children chanting "I do believe in fairies - I do - I do" at a Peter Pan pantomime - the kids know it's make-believe, but its fun because everyone else seems convinced that Tinkerbell is going to come back to life!

You have a point Atrax Robustus ( sorry if I mispelled your name) it is self deception with majority of people however I have met some people and they are just so convinced that I am sure what they are exibiting is a form of emotional disturbance/mental illness.

I had in mind a person I know who is a born again christian and everyone around her knows it. If you do not belive in god she hounds you with bible quotes . I just stay clear of her as it is a waste of time talking to her about anything as she is full of conspiracy theories of the government.

They are very very extreme and has faced paced talking most of the time changed her whole life to revolve around "god". There is no way anyone could talk rationally to her at all as everything that happens is because of gods will.

I have seen people similar to this and they are put on medications or stop taking certain drugs and they are able to think a little rationally doesnt mean they are athiests though but more agnostic.

Mind you I am sure on some level she must realise something.
