Hi and welcome. Stay cool, typing this in Melbourne and it’s still 40C.
ikr! Just got back from QL where I was slapped in the face by heat and humidity the moment I stepped off the aircraft and the same today as I walked out my front door. 'bout time we had a stinker just to be able to say Melbourne gets hot weather too.
Ironically, my faulty aircon decided to start working again today...

No great intellectual prowess. Friends that asked questions I didn't have answers for basically. And a whiff of intellectual honesty. In a way, I have always been a little annoyed in the way my brain worked, or rather didn't work. I would come to some conclusion, but had no idea how I arrived at it. My mind acted like a black box. I was often right, but could only justify it later with reason and evidence [if I was right, that is].

I came to release that being right [or wrong] is not half as important as how you get there. I hated my "black box" type answers.

That and a lack of confidence in myself. I thought I was too stupid, my mind to defective, to understand god, because a great many people that were smarter than me, could believe in god. So what was wrong with me?

Science always interested me. That was another plus. Because it gives you the same sort of tools that you need to debunk stuff, and gives you yardsticks to estimate truth or falsity.

Lastly, I can, to a certain extent, "model" something that might be emotionally charged, or something most people can't detach themselves on.

Sort of a "sand-box" thing. The ability to play with an idea I might be strongly invested in. I don't say I can do it for all subjects, or perfectly, but I did it well enough with my false beliefs, and worse, confused thinking about god, to escape.

Welcome Misdemeanour.

I got religion and eventually got back out. So identifying as atheist was merited.

I was just reading a Guardian article on prison inmates getting converted to Islam. An Islamic 'pastor' to them said they 'embrace Islam.'

No, that's not what happens at all. That's to imply that after they have critically thought about it from an educated standpoint, they have rightly and reasonably, rationally decided to become a Muslim.

It's more like the mega meme, the need for belonging and the formulaic morality and constraints on thinking, a kind of maladaptive discipline that the religion offers, seduces them. I'd say they are actually profoundly uneducated and Islam will be an impediment to addressing that.

I really only meant to say hi and welcome.
