Default Religion and the very young - What compromise?

Perhaps I may not be equipped, or even too close, in regard to the mental abuse of young children. No matter how I reason, all I see is parent's prescribing to a belief among many belief's, and knowing they all can't be right, are still able to abuse their children regardless of risk and pain. The vast majority of these people have only the most basic understanding of their own theology, yet this goes on with pride.

I don't see a real problem in reaching a compromise over teenagers, perhaps with some required historicity and discussion of the controversies. The hidden shown, followed by an "off you go", might be enough for me. But what about the really young developing mind, that is then tortured by the conflicts of "what is true", against reason?

We have to live together and progress as a society, and I cannot expect an end to child indoctrination, but also cannot see the compromise? Am I being unreasonable? Any thoughts on the subject?

I understand your concern David but it is a very difficult thing to impose restriction on what parents can teach their children.

I think the most practical long term solution to reducing the indoctrination of young children, would be to agitate for the removal of the promotion of religion from the definition as a charitable endevour and tax all religious income and assets that are not 100% charitable.

This would mean they have to pay there way and stop freeloading on society. Tax their properties, income, schools, hospitals, retirement villages, businesses etc, I believe this would be the most effective way to reduce their hold over society.

Christopher hitchens - Teach all religions and you inoculate, teach one religion and you indoctrinate.

Teach kids comparative religion in every school. Done.

As Bruce1937 said, while the private domain of parenting allows child brainwashing with impunity, we should intensify our efforts to wind it back in the public sphere. I'm increasingly horrified about religious schools, and the public funding they receive. It's getting worse as public attitudes improve on marriage, family, gender roles and other issues...but these institutions are allowed to discriminate against their employees and fill children's heads with garage while many parents are probably unaware it's going on. Also, we can promote consciousness-raising so that people who are less religious than the previous generation uderstand that they have better options in raising their own children.
