Default Purpose

I have skimmed the rules and some information. However, I'm unclear what I should be doing on this forum.

Can you please explain what is the purpose of running AFA forum so I can fulfill its purposes as I see fit? I am not going to waste my time interacting in a manner that is of secondary to no importance. I want to engage here in a manner that is productive, practicable, constructive and conducive to catalysing changes to the real world.

I look forward to a favourable reply here

I'm relatively new here compared to some so i'm bit shy about discussing the forum's 'purpose,' but i'll do it anyway. For me it's just a virtual community of people who value reason and science over religion and superstition. It's also an excellent resource for articles that are of interest to such people. It's also good for an occasional rant, a spleen venting and a bit of humor and also sometimes, some virtual moral support which can be very valuable at the right moment. Well, that's the forum's purpose for me.

Oh, and arguing with theists too, but i'm more a spectator in that regard, so i guess thats an entertainment feature.

Come to think of it, this forum is pretty good value for me!

Especially at the price.
Different things for different people.

Just be yourself - the rest will work itself out as you go along.

Not sure the rules are the place to go for such information. What you should be doing is whatever you think will garner discussion. Sometimes people will engage with your topics, and sometimes they won't. I engage in the topics that interest me although, even then, I might wait until a thread has some real meat on it before I engage, for the simple reason that I've trodden an awful lot of ground on these topics and I generally wait until much of that ground has been explored before interjecting.

As an example, there's a discussion going on on another forum about free will. I've discussed this topic down to its constituent quarks in the past, as have many of the members here, so I tend to wait until a thread on this topic has gotten past the preliminaries and only interject when I can bring something to the table that isn't already on it, but in a way that I know will make sense in light of the discussion that preceded it. I only joined the fray when we'd gotten past all the definitions and the discussion was wandering into areas dealing with causation, because the free will discussion always gets to that point, and it's precisely the concept of 'cause' that generates the most deeply fallacious thinking in this area. I let topics evolve and then bring in my experience. I know others here do the same, largely because they've been involved in those same discussion with me in the past in other venues.

The purpose of the forum is the same as all forums, namely a place to connect with other people with some of the same interests and to discuss them, socialise, etc.

The engagement's the thing. You can't interact in a manner that is of secondary to no importance because it's the interaction that fulfils the purpose of the forum, regardless of the form that interaction takes. It's all about exploring the things that interest you, and shouldn't really be about what others see as important. It's a place for you to explore your thinking.

It's like asking for the purpose of a pencil after you've spent years scribbling with it!

The purpose is, if nothing else, for you to express your thoughts!

Az have we not been through this sort of thing before? The forum is a discussion place. You make of it what you will, and take from it what you wish.
It owes you nothing, least of all world changing fireworks. Those things are your own to create.
You must decide for yourself if it is an important enough place for you.

Mrs Slash has been complaining about it for years.
