Reasons for conversion over the years
Many years ago the football association in SA ruled that where a school was part of the local footy competition then the school had first priority on players. In other words if you didnt want to play for your school but the local club, stiff. The local catholic school was particularly nasty in this regard. Toe the line or risk a beating from the good brothers. This particular school had a particularly nasty sports master who also taught Judo at the local YMCA. Most parents kept quiet because they were frightened of him.
On one occassion a student refused to play for them and played for his local club. During the following week he was beaten by this sports master. The coach of the local club was a little pissed off about this and took matters into his own hands.
He turned up in the class room and without a word flattened the sports master in front of his class then informed him that if he ever layed a finger on anyone ever again he would come back a kick the shit out of him. The good brother disapeared interstate shortly after.
I have friends who attended these schools and beatings from the nuns and brothers were common and accepted practice. These practices realy didn't start disappearing until the late 1960's.
Public schools had the cane but certainly not the excesses of the private schools.
