In case anyone thought that my previous post was denigrating the achievement of landing Curiosity on the surface of Mars, it wasn't meant to; I'm all for un-manned exploration of Mars. I was just trying to indicate that any photos it takes really won't give the "big picture" as to what the surface of Mars is really like.

If you don't already subscribe to NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day, you might like to. Those images were from among many I've saved from that site, usually to use as my computer desktop background. They are:
Dark Sand Cascades on Mars
Flowing Barchan Sand Dunes on Mars
Martian Dust Devil Trails

Those dark structures look like they are actually taller than the background as they hide parts of uniform features. They look like some kind of trees or at least something that is sticking out of the surrounding terrain. Making the image double in size shows this to be true as far as photographs go. And the top representation appears to be in a straightish line similar to a barrier or fence. Interesting.

David.

David, NASA says-
dark sand on the interior of Martian sand dunes became more and more visible as the spring Sun melted the lighter carbon dioxide ice. When occurring near the top of a dune, dark sand may cascade down the dune leaving dark surface streaks -- streaks that might appear at first to be trees standing in front of the lighter regions,
but still, I agree, WOW just WOW

ogham,

Damn, there goes my new Tarzan (trees) theory and the beginning of a new Marzanian religion with all its tax breaks and privileges.

Not in the least bit denigrating. I appreciate all modes of planetary exploration for their varied perspectives and input, well except astral traveling
Thanks for the pic of the day site also.
