Default Why I'm an atheist

Hi
I'm new here. I never was for or against religion until I was in my 20s. I did not have time or interest or reason to focus on the subject. In my late 20s I met several religious people who tried to convert me and as at the time I was going through a difficult period I went to religious services with them. Eventually I realized that it was nothing more than brainwashing and stopped coming to services. 3 years later I met religious people of another religion while still going through the same rough time and eventually months later left this religion too. The combined experience of these two major religions first hand convinced me like nothing else in the fact that god is only something made up by humans. I found the believers that I met to be often prejudiced and intollerant to who they see as outsiders. As an atheist or just a free thinking member of the public I met bigotry and intolerance and very deluded way of dealing with people. I tried to reason with religious people and these discussions which lead to hostility on their part lead me to find this website. I always read how various religions were discriminated against historically but rarely read or heard the reverse and I guess I did not tolerate the attacks of zealots well as opposed to some less thin skinned individuals I know.

Hi Lyn7

This is a message sent to all who find their way to these forums.

We like people, and we like facts too! We're friendly but we're skeptical, and if somebody calls for proof, it's not an accusation. Only the strong ideas thrive here: we try to respect people. (We do not tolerate personal abuse.)

You may already have visited these other handy places:
* New Member Information
* Welcome from AFA president
* For those interested in learning, I recommend the Atheism Resource Thread maintained by Fearless.
* And a quick look at our reserved spot for belief-based discussion, Fantasy Island, includes The Great Big List, a sort-of "things we've seen before" for those of faith, and general rules of argument for the forum.

If you've got questions, please ask. Moderators have red name tags, but many of our friendly people may have the answers you need.

Enjoy the forums. We hope to see plenty from you in discussions.

Have fun.

Hi Lyn7, welcome. What is your first language?

Religions seem to pray on people when they are going through tough times. Its how they recruit people.

Hi Lyn7 and welcome to the forums

Congratulations on seeing through the tricks and lies of those who seek to convert people to their brand of nonsense and coming to the rational conclusion that it is indeed all made up.

Hope you enjoy it here. I would not have picked from your writing that English was not your first language. I've seen far, FAR worse from people whose first language is English
