I've watched the first episode. Does it get better? It seemed a bit too woo-ish and fairytale-ish to me. I like raw, gritty realism in my mini-series. Like "The Killing" and "Boardwalk Empire".

It's really good - it gets into the politics of those who rule and those who want to rule. Reading second book now.

as someone mentioned in the comments, if Bush really was in Game of Thrones, it wouldnt be to much to expect him ended up there in the first place

Definitely. It manages to maintain a sense of realism despite the obvious fantasy elements.

Head on a pike? I suppose they don't have an International Criminal Court in Westeros ...

Or with jurisdiction in the US!

If the series continues to faithfully follow the books, in regards to woo, religion etc. it gets significantly worse than the first episode. Not that I think it has any underlying religious message (although we have to wait for the last 2 books). I guess it just depends whether you can enjoy fantasy where absurd beliefs in reality are true in the fantasy world or not.

Some of the parts in season two with Stannis Baratheon's priestess (or something to that effect) was a bit...much. I'm still on the first book, so I'm not sure the series ends up discussing it in further detail, but for the moment it seems like just a necessary side-story of the series with little real impact.
