I remember seeing a runner interviewed after she won a race. The poor thing said it wasn't her, it was 'god', it had nothing to with her apparently. coughmuppetcough

Unfortunately, inappropriately crediting a non-existent deity with the kudos for personal achievement is supposed to equate to "humility", for some.

No sense of irony in that presumption, of course. The proposition that an omnipotent god allows (causes?) large numbers of children to starve every day, but still thinks that you winning a sporting contest is important enough to personally tilt the scales in your favour, (if not to outright intervene on your behalf), is the polar opposite of "humble".

Anyway, even if a deity could actually do that, it's not really that impressive, come to think of it...

Any match-fixer or corrupt sports bookie could do the same, and probably more.

Excellent point - to use a soccer analogy, it would be 11 men against 12 - the opposing players plus God, hardly very impressive if the side supported by an omnipotent deity manages to win.

I'd be insisting that the referee send one of their blokes off (preferably the old bearded bloke floating around just above the pitch...)

The latest - He may be able to play rugby league. He had a (self-inflicted) rough time, and I support the "live and let live attitude", but ... there are a few logical ... gaps:

''He had his decision to make. I might not like it, some people might not like it, but you have to move on. I had to live with it and I feel I am a better person. As I have tattooed on me 'everything happens for a reason'. That's why I don't have any hard feelings.''

In which case she should have been disqualified for cheating.

This is also one of (and believe me I have many) pevs with the theists. But mostly on the grounds that "I am so special that god himself intervenes in my life and I am such a more worthwhile person than those other losers that I beat because god does not love them as much as me". The self conceit of theists is enough to make me want to spew.

Surely the wrong way around? If the athletes believe that it is god that's winning for them, wouldn't it make sense to them to send the 12 men off and just let god deal with the opposing team?

Of course dealing with the opposing team and actually scoring a goal might be a different kettle of fish. I can easily see him going ZAAAAP and just leaving a smoking hole in the ground every time one of the oppsoing team nears the goals area, but I can't quite envisage him lifting up his robes and giving the ball a good kick to actually win the game. I expect a nil all draw every time if its left up to god.

If I heard the news aright a moment ago, god caused Djokovic to double-fault on match point to hand Nadal a record 7th title, ahead of Bjorn Borg.

A source later said that Djokovic had the match in his hand thanks to his own dedication, training and talent, and a brilliant second serve lined up, when god screwed him over good and proper.

It is understood that Mullah Omar has proposed a change of sponsorship, although the rewards would need to be significant given Novak has been faithful to his present sponsor for some time.
