The gun lobby would (and have done) point out that the data presented by Coryate shows that firearm related death was falling long before Port Arthur (1996) and the gun buy-back.

Quite true, but the drop was mostly due to gun owners having to go to a gun club to do safety training, so less people where shooting themselves accidentally.
