Quite! I'm not good with crowds but even worse when I don't have the anonymity of said crowd. More a minger than a mingler, I have to force myself to be sociable when I'd prefer to tucked away in quiet, dark room somewhere.

Posting here for the past year has been part of my "preparation" for GAC. I'm counting on peer pressure to make sure I'm sociable.

So I understand Rhys reluctance but I hope it doesn't stop him from doing things he loves.

Rhys, GAC 2014 - it's a date. Let's meet for coffee. Okay?!?

2012 Student Leadership Conference
2012 Student Leadership Conference -Friday, April 13, 2012 from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM Melbourne. Tickets are $20, but even just catching up with people afterwards and networking on Facebook and Twitter would be a good idea if you can't afford it?

Contact the FTA via Facebook and Twitter at http://www.facebook.com/freethoughtalliance
and

this seems pretty cool

True ... age doesn't mean you feel entirely confident in a large crowd when you know no-one. I'm feeling a bit apprehensive and rationing was still the go (in London) when I was born!

Hiya coffee, do you want to take a wander up to Skydeck with us on Fri afternoon?, no pressure to actually go in The Edge.

Red face Re: younger athiest

Hi Mark,

I can see why everyone says the forum is a friendly place -- and the convention.

That's really nice offer. Thank you. I had to go to the Skydeck/Edge website to see what they were. Hmmm ... Skydeck is a possible. The Edge? Let's just say I qualify on a couple of the 'You shouldn't do this' conditions on the web site.

So, if we can arrange a time and you tell me how I'll recognise you I'll see how brave I can be!

Coffee, this is my little outing for AFA forumites. Friday 13 April @ 2:30 pm. There are a handful of us so far...

And I'm "disqualified" on the heights and confined spaces but, apparently, I can't back out now!

There are still tickets available and a catered lunch is included. Debbie Goddard, Chris Stedman, and Lyz Liddell are all speaking, as well as Jason Ball and other people involved in the FUA. There will also be some surprise guests joining us for lunch . Of course non-students are more than welcome to attend.
Had a great time at this event, I hope people managed to attend. If you didn't, the mystery guests who hung around for an hour talking to students were Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, Lawrence Krauss, and PZ Myers

Lyz Liddell was also excellent - I found her talk especially useful, and OJ and Shaun's student speeches were highlights too.

I went to the first GAC on my own, having never met anyone there IRL. This forum can be a good way to make connections before attending. In fact, we should probably have a "Get Connected For the Next GAC" thread somewhere to help out the lone newbies.
