Default Gap at top of screen

First, I'm thrilled with my new pc and actually love Windows 7 (I buyed a book)

There is an irritating problem:

A small gap, about 3cm appears at the top of the screen when ever I open a window, any window, including normal windowin ANY media player.

Wallaper is fine, appearing in full screen,so it is no the resolution.

It disappears if I switch to the browser to full screen mode, (as opposed to maximised). Display mode is correct. Cannot correct it by dragging.

Tried a system restore.

Chkdsk

Have spent bloody hours looking for a solution.

Could it be a driver? I according to Slimdrivers' I have 17 out-of-date drivers, including NVIDIA GeforceGT520 (video card)

I'm loathe to mess around with that driver until I'm as sure as I can be the existing driver is causing the problem.

Not a driver. Leave that alone for the time being.

Have you maximized the window after opening?

I am sure I know this but would have to turn on my PC to find the answer.

Yes. As I said, the gap is still there after maximising the screen,BUT disappears in full screen mode, which is not the same. Task, navigation etc bars also dissappear and are not accesible unless I close full screen mode.

The problem persistes with ANY open window, wether I'm on line or not.

So it's either a problem with the monitor or the OS. I will run Ubuntu from a live CD and see what happens

ADDENDUM:Ran Ubuntu; no gap.

I CAN work around it by staying in ful lscreen mode, but it's a pain.

Googling shows this is a common problem. I suspect there may be a simple solution. I have not found it yet but wilp persevere

Is it a Dell? Try uninstalling datasafe (if you don't use it) and restarting

To be safe, with any OEM PC I would reinstall the OS as soon as I get it. It will often remove (at least some of) the crapware. Ideally reinstall from clean Windows 7 medium (although there is a nice trick in the Lenovo machines to get it to install clean Windows 7 from the recovery media - you just refuse the request for the applications & drivers disc)

It's an Acer all-in-one,Z5761.

Have partially fixed the problem:

Have been trawling a Windows 7 forum and found this solution on offer: (there are a LOT of ideas ,but so far all have been wrong).

What I did:

Opened IE

Pressed F11. Gap gone in IE and on any window I open with IE. BUT not in Firefox or any off line window. BUT the MS theme/wallper I'm using is just dandy.

So the problem persist, as will I seeking a solution.

Protium, thank you for your effort, however, this machine in an Acer.

That I can (mostly) get IE to do what I want, but not off line windows, and that there is no gap with Ubuntu, suggests an OS problem to me.

My gut feeling is it is a settings problem,or a bug because of how common the issue seems to be.

So fa the variousr Windows forums I've visited are pretty useless.

OF COURSE I've worked out work arounds, but they're tedious and irritating. I want to understand and fix the problem, not hide it.

BINGO!

I think I've worked out the problem.THERE IS NO GAP! There's a small horizontal task-bar size box, with a description of the open window, (what is it called) THEN the the area is blank, leaving a horizontal gap across the screen until you reach minimise, maximise and close buttons. If I can move that little dialogue line and the command buttons there should be no gap.

I've been asking the wrong question. I'm sorry for wasting your time guys, I feel pretty stupid.
