For starters, here are some useful links:

http://melbournehotelmap.com/convention-center.html

http://www.budgetstay.com.au/

http://www.wotif.com/hotels/cheap-ac...melbourne.html (not sure this will be much use so far in advance but maybe worth a look anyway)

I'm all booked now. Thanks for these links, Praxis.

EDIT: Thanks also, Davo.

Mrs DB and me are going to be again enjoying the $100 apartment at the YHA. Somehow, we find these hostels are friendlier and cheaper than hotels, especially in that budget range. Many interesting conversations are to be had in the common rooms, dining hall and roof [smokers! ] with people from all nations and walks of life that happens less often in a hotel setting. The Unit is large but with a separate bedroom, on-suite and balcony. Air conditioning and kitchen of course.

It is not totally unknown for the Bulldog on the roof or smoking areas to convert the odd skeptic of science or atheism to a more rational viewpoint, albeit at the cost of some lung function.

Onya DB. I can well understand the allure of hostels. You really do meet some very interesting people.

If it was up to me, it would be a toss up between where we are staying and a hostel. Where we are staying has some wonderful people staying there as well.

Hey Praxis, nice to see you too.

Things are better - though not as much as I would hope of course. But things are definitely getting better for me.

How about you?

Staying the same place I stayed for the 2010 convention : http://www.hotelcauseway.com.au/
found it to be very clean and well appointed, decent sized rooms and right in the middle of the CBD (just near the mall). I booked via Wotif last time and from memory the rate was about $115 p/n, though they do have special deals & rates as well.

@pierrenoir - this will sell out quickly, so keep an eye out for announcements when tickets go on sale
