“The only position that leaves me with no cognitive dissonance is atheism. It is not a creed. Death is certain, replacing both the siren-song of Paradise and the dread of Hell. Life on this earth, with all its mystery and beauty and pain, is then to be lived far more intensely: we stumble and get up, we are sad, confident, insecure, feel loneliness and joy and love. There is nothing more; but I want nothing more.” -Christopher Hitchens

Good news!

Live cattle exports to Indonesia will be banned for up to 6 months:

I found Mick Molloy very funny on radio this morning: "They're just cows!" "Oh we'd better put on our finest, we're dining at the captain's table tonight." etc. Very funny, but raised a good point amongst it: why are they so good at transporting the cattle, but not so good with the refugees?

What, indeed, is an atheist? He is one who destroys delusions which are harmful to humanity in order to lead men back to nature, to reality, to reason. Baron d'Holbach

If we go back to the beginnings of things, we shall always find that ignorance and fear created the gods; that imagination, rapture and deception embellished them; that weakness worships them; that custom spares them; and that tyranny favours them in order to profit from the blindness of men. Luckily the RSPCA has considered the practice and recommends the use of stun bolts immediately after the throat of the animal is severed. This seems like a reasonable compromise. Until Indonesia can guarentee such methods will be employed across the board, I see no reason to subject Australian cattle to the current conditions within the country.
One of the topics at the recent Atheist convention in Dublin was
'Religion: accommodate or confront.'
After following the debate within and outside this forum I think that on this issue we should definitely confront. As an interim and as a minimum the animal should be stunned before the throat is cut. Ultimately I hope that we will reach a stage where religious demands and sensitivities are taken out of the equation and we do not have to export live animals at all.
"We live, we die and the wheels on the bus go round and round". Bucket list.

Hi all

Bills to permanently ban our live animal export will be submitted to Parliament on 20th June, one by independent MP Wilkie and Senator Xenophon and another one by the Greens.

There is a national protest rally to show support for these bills.

If anyone is interested in attending a protest they will be held on Saturday the 18th June between 12 – 2pm at Parliament House in Qld, NSW, ACT, VIC, TAS, SA, WA, and NT. And Council Buildings in ALL regional and rural towns across the country.

Here are some links with details for the rally:

Hope to see some Perth Atheists there!
