I really like the idea of having Poseidon/Neptune there to give the blessing... The sailors get their pomp and ceremony AND you get to demonstrate how silly it is to assume that imaginary people have any sway over the fleet's fortune (or lack of) this season.

Better still would be leading a worship of the BOM, an eye in the sky that actually contributes to the fortunes and safety of Queensland's sailors.

I just couldn't do it. Hold a microphone to enable a priest to spout superstition. You must feel sick inside now.

I would have yelled out during the verse reading. Something like "what is with this superstition? This is nonsense!" I would readily sacrifice my membership with any club instead of sitting back and treating religion to a minute of untouchable respect.

It was tough. I don't think any off the current members are overtly religious. Was the 100year celebration, so a lot of older folk there, hence the reason I just bit my tongue. Would not have done it any other year.

Would the intonation "Good luck people, enjoy yourselves and be careful out there" not cover it?

The club is not a christian organization. Can the committee decide and announce that the club will no longer hold this event as an official club function (not being a christian organization) but any members who wish to continue the tradition can make their own arrangements at their own cost provided they do not hinder others? President and committee members would not need attend.

We recently had a 3 day tractor trek for charity. One of the organisers organised a blessing of the fleet. Didn't help; 2 of the 15 tractors broke down.

I'dve thought it be more appropriate to have an acknowledgement of aboriginal country, myself....
