Ursula K le Guin

The mother of my tribe. I've had fan encounters with a couple of the legends of SF (Gene Wolfe, Larry Niven, Harlan Ellison), but I regret never meeting her. I even bought a first edition of "A Wizard of Earthsea", after reading how much she liked the cover art compared to later terrible covers.

Quote:
In person, Le Guin had always had a lean, frighteningly attentive demeanour. In old age, her face seemed carved with wisdom. She had become the mother of her tribe.
And this:

Quote:
Ms. Le Guin’s fictions range from young-adult adventures to wry philosophical fables. They combine compelling stories, rigorous narrative logic and a lean but lyrical style to draw readers into what she called the “inner lands” of the imagination. Such writing, she believed, could be a moral force.

“If you cannot or will not imagine the results of your actions, there’s no way you can act morally or responsibly,” she told The Guardian in an interview in 2005. “Little kids can’t do it; babies are morally monsters — completely greedy. Their imagination has to be trained into foresight and empathy.”
She was one of my favourite authors, recently mentioned over on the books and reading thread. For a while I'd been contemplating what a significant day it will be when she dies. Then a few days ago some features appeared on the front pages of my usual websites. I thought she'd just given some speech, as the headlines didn't say it was because she'd died. I resolved to check back later and read about it in less busy times. Now I found out she died and I missed the news!

Captain of the Rainbow Warrior who led many of Greenpeace’s most dramatic marine campaigns

John Vidal

The seaman Jon Castle, who has died of cancer aged 67, led many of Greenpeace’s most dramatic marine campaigns, including the occupation of the Brent Spar oil platform and the opposition to nuclear testing.
Go Guardian. Read thing. Lots!
That was interesting. My initial reaction was a little negartive, because I've long been distinctly-not-a-fan of Greenpeace, but it seems his break with them occurred around the same time I began vehemently disagree with them. The work he did with them still seems pretty laudable to me, and I'll raise a glass to the bugger.

Thanks for the history lesson, Irrev.

Shocking Blue's bassist is gone.

According to Wikipedia: Bassist Klaasje van der Wal died on 13 February 2018 at the age of 69.

How could any music fan not love the early 1970s "Dutch Invasion" -- Shocking Blue, The Tee Set, Golden Earring, Focus, the George Baker Selection, Mouth & MacNeal ... ?

Joyce Mayne, that wonderful old lady of the white goods business fame in the eighties, sadly finally passed on today, aged 102. Cause of death? Kelvinator.

RIP Joyce.
