Hmmm... good on them. FWIW, I thought that some later exit from WBC was on the cards for some of that generation of Phelps', when I saw the Louis Theroux docos on WBC.

I really hope they get a good support network around them, to help the transition out.

I suspect it'd be quite similar to leaving a cult. Fairly traumatic.

Nate Phelps has been out and openly atheist for some time. He will have a good idea what is going on for them and may be able to help.

True, dat.

Reading the links, it appears that Megan (at least) hasn't yet made any sort of transition to atheism. Hopefully the fact that Nate is, doesn't prevent her from seeking or accepting his help. Old habits die hard, I s'pose.

Nothing much changes for ol' Fred and his band of picketing ghouls, it seems...

Texas Fertilizer Plant Explosion: Sheriff, Students Warns Westboro Baptist Church Against Protesting Firefighters' Funerals:
Quote:
The controversial Westboro Baptist Church has been warned against picketing the funerals of those killed in last week's fertilizer plant explosion in West, Texas.
The anti-gay extremist group released a press release confirming that they plan to be in Waco on Thursday to demonstrate at the memorial services held for firefighters who died in the blast. In their statement, the WBC "praised God" for the explosion which injured around 200 and killed 14 people, including an 8-year-old boy. The group blamed the tradegy on God's hatred of same-sex marriage.
In response, the McLennon Country Sheriff, Parnell McNamara, offered a sharp warning against the church or any other organization that threatens to disrupt the funeral services held for the victims of the blast.
"We've been made aware that there could be individuals or groups who plan to picket or protest during the funeral services of our fallen heroes," said McNamara in a statement. "Make no mistake about it, any attempt by any group or organization to disrupt the funerals of any of our victims of this tragedy will be dealt with swiftly and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. I've contacted District Attorney Abel Rena and he has assured me of his cooperation in this matter. We're simply not going to tolerate that."
However, just in case the WBC ignores that warning, groups such as "Red Wall against Westboro" and "Maroon Wall for West" said they will also attend the ceremonies in order to stop the pickets and provide a comfortable environment for those who are mourning.
Boston Area Awaits Promised Westboro Protest of Bombing Victim's Funeral:
Quote:
The tiny fundamentalist Westboro Baptist Church announced over the weekend that it would picket the Monday funeral of 29-year-old Boston Marathon bombing victim Krystle Campbell. The church is celebrating the bomb attacks as God's wrath.

As with other Westboro funeral protests, there's expected to be an attempt to prevent the church from getting near the Medford, Mass., funeral service.
Teamsters Local 25 President Sean O'Brien asked off-duty members of the 11,000-member group to join efforts to "form a human shield and block the Westboro Baptist Church."
"Westboro Baptist Church should understand that we will go to great lengths to make sure they don't protest any funerals of the victims of the past week's tragedies, and that those we lost receive a proper burial," O'Brien said.
...
Westboro said in its Saturday press release that it intends to picket the funeral from 9:15 to 10 a.m. Monday.
"Antichrist Rebel-in-chief Barack Obama comforted you in the sin of same-sex marriage when he announced his support for it," the church said. "He is chiefly to blame for bringing down the wrath of God on Boston, on Massachusetts and on USA. He vows that those responsible for the Boston Marathon Bombs would feel the full weight of justice. Hello, Mr. Pervert-in-chief! GOD SENT THE BOMBS!"
It added: "WBC will remind you at every opportunity that God is your enemy & fights against you! THANK GOD FOR THE BOSTON MARATHON BOMBS!"
So fucking obscene, that people banding together to frustrate their hateful and self-serving agenda is now the norm, it seems...

I truly hope that this vile cult implodes and disintegrates when the leader finally croaks out.

Indeed. Even well before his demise would be preferable.
