Default Marriage Equality is a Call to Action for the non-Religious

There are posts all over this forum that relate to SSM but i think it would be good to consolidate in one place, not sure where that is?

Anyway, from Murdoch's Aussie news headline site news.com

Quote:
Time for young people to do something that can make a difference

WHEN plans for a postal survey to decide the question of same-sex marriage were announced, there was a chorus of concern about whether young people would be left out.
I couldn’t help but think that surely this was an over-reaction?
The idea that young people were too lazy to go online, register for the electoral roll and then post a letter, seemed just a bit patronising...

Previous Galaxy polls have shown about 80 per cent of those aged 18 to 24 years old back marriage equality. And judging from the number of rainbow filters I see on people’s Facebook profiles, this is an underestimate.

I have an 18 year old son and i've been making sure his chums are signed up and ready to cast their opinion.

We all know that in the end it doesnt matter if the 'no's' win the survey, we'll reach SSM at some point but that point would be sooner if the 'yes'' wins.

This is an atheist issue, in my view, on the grounds that rejecting marriage equality is largely based on religious belief - its just not rational. What can we do to help? How do we change minds?

You did not specify your son's view, but I am going to hazard a guess and say that you have already helped. you raised a son who can rise above religiousity and ignorance.

We have been fighting against a deeply entrenched enemy. religiousity and ignorance have been the default state for millenia. we have made remarkable progress in a couple hundred years but it will take time to undo.

SSM is inevitable. about fucking time.

Atheist issue? Maybe, but I'm primarily a humanist.

Any person of group standing for the same causes has my support, unless they're slave-trading or putting kittens into nasty machinery.

Never before have Australia’s leading youth publishers joined forces to make an almighty noise about a singular issue. But marriage equality is perhaps the most important social fight we’ve faced in the last decade, so we’re doing just that.
From 5pm to 8pm on Wednesday, August 23, Junkee, PEDESTRIAN.TV, Broadsheet, VICE and FBi Radio will turn dark — that means we’re blacking out our respective social channels and sites to make it very clear the time is now for you, the youth of Australia, to take action and enrol or update your details for the upcoming postal vote on marriage equality.

Son, and his circles, are wide eyed that this is even an issue. They think my generation are dickheads.

Yes, he and his will vote yes.

I just asked my daughter if she knew anyone who is against it. she said 'no one except Eric Abetz's son' (who is in her year at uni).

Reminder: Anybody not on the electoral roll must register by close of biz today, if they want to help make a difference, albeit a token one.

I suspect the numbers in favour in the postal ballot will come out less on SSM side than the regular polls put out by the news sites simply because you don't have to be 18 to enter a internet poll, the numbers will be slightly skewed against SSM as compared to the actual numbers on the polls, this will of course be seen as a victory of the anti-ssm brigade even if they lose the overall vote.

It seems to me manifestly unfair that the generation that will be living with this decision and who are probably overwhelmingly for it don't get to vote and the generation that are going to die and leave the mess behind do get a vote. So I propose a new system where we count the number of people in the country under 18 and, starting with the oldest in society, discard votes until the injustice has been repaired
