Default Jehovah's telemarketing me

I was in bed this morning when my son brought the phone in to me. It was the Jehovah's telemarketing their magazine. Despite the sleep in the eyes, I immediately thought "this will not end well".

Her pitch started poorly. "Our magazine is based on the bible and will tell you what God has to say about all of the violence and wars we are experiencing."

I explained how I'm quite well aware of all the violence and wars that God commanded in the bible. This seemed to confuse her and was possibly not the usual response. The poor lass appeared slightly shocked to discover that there are numerous examples of God commanding violence and war which I was more than happy to share with her.

She promised to get back to me with an adequate explanation of why a God who commands the genocide of children could be considered "good".

I moved the discussion onto the topic of "why" she was a believer. She confidently went off on a soliloquy about all the prophecies in the bible which the bible claim to have come to pass demonstrate that the bible is the true word of God. I asked her "Forgetting for a moment the lack of any independent evidence for successful prophecies, what about the failed prophecies?". Once again, this appeared to confuse her. Being a very giving person who always tries to help others, I spent a few minutes taking her through Matthew 24 (which describes the prophecy of the end of days and the second coming). She seems to be shocked once again to find that this gospel states that Jesus declared that all of this was to occur in the lifetime of those he was talking to.

She promised to get back to me with an adequate explanation of why Jesus would declare that the end of the world was to happen in the lifetime of his apostles who were present when it clearly hadn't.

Admit it - schooling that poor lass gave you a cheap thrill, didn't it

Yes. I normally threaten offenders with a hypothetical complaint to the ACMA. However, we don't get religious door knockers here and I miss playing with them.
