Default Re: Safe schools program challenged by conservative MP's

Here's a window into how utterly Astroturfed (by the ACL) the entire shemozzle was. This is what caused Turnbull's abject cave-in:

The Anti-Gay Emails To MPs: Safe Schools Program Will ‘Destroy Civilisation’
Quote:
While some in Canberra are choosing their words carefully, emails obtained by New Matilda reveal a dark streak to a campaign spearheaded by the Australian Christian Lobby. Max Chalmers reports.

Emails sent to MPs encouraging them to oppose the LGBTI friendly Safe Schools Coalition describe homosexuality as “unnatural”, compare it to murder, warn God sees gays and lesbians as an abomination, rail against “heterophobia”, and claim lesser evils than the program have caused civilisations to end.

The disturbing content the campaign has produced emerges a day after the Federal Coalition agreed to review the Safe Schools program after complaints from the party’s right forced Education Minister Simon Birmingham to ease off previous statements of stern support.

New Matilda has seen a relatively small portion of the thousands of emails sent to NSW state MPs but they reveal a deep seam of open homophobia, paranoia, and confusion at the heart of the movement opposing the Safe Schools Coalition.

The majority of the emails appear to have been sent with the assistance of a generator produced by the Australian Christian Lobby, and the conservative lobby group’s talking points can be found throughout.

Many of the emails are openly hostile to LGBTI people.

“Do not allow these funds to be use for the advancement and propagation of gay lesbian agenda. We do not want our children to adopt these unnatural habits,” one says.

“It is an thinly disguised attempt to indoctrinate our children and young people into accepting homosexuality and ‘gender diversity’ as normal,” another notes.

The emails, some of which come from concerned parents, often put forward general religious objections to homosexuality or gender diversity.

Yet another email states:

Quote:
“I am very disappointed to find a backside way to approve things God Almighty forbid using our children to force us to accept and also to distort a whole generation by insulting the human race. God only created am man & a woman nothing was unclear, to get marry each other & have babies & fill the earth.”
Greens MLC David Shoebridge’s office told New Matilda they had received well over 2,000 emails since October 2015. Labor MLC Penny Sharpe said she had been sent “hundreds”, and said they were “at best misinformed, at worst homophobic and transphobic, and deliberately misleading.”

NSW Greens Sexuality and Gender Identity spokesperson, Jenny Leong, accused the Australian Christian Lobby of running a misinformation campaign.

Seems our grand old parties (hehehe) still have plenty of dinosaurs. I shudder when I imagine Bill Shorten as PM, but at least he took a shot at Bernardi.

Safe Schools 'terrible, focused on homosexual issues', Labor senator Joe Bullock says
Quote:
Senator Bernardi has called on the Government to withdraw funding for the program, which he said was indoctrinating students.

He has faced criticism from Labor over his remarks and on Wednesday interjected while Mr Shorten was addressing media on the issue.

Senator Bernardi stated: "At least I'm honest, Bill."

Mr Shorten responded by saying: "At least I'm not a homophobe."

The Labor leader stood by his comments today, saying he did "in five seconds what Malcolm Turnbull hasn't done in five months".
The Safe Schools program is under review because Bernardi (via the ACL) presented a petition with 9,400 signing.

The Greens have organised a counter petition. So far almost 22,000 ...

Thanks, yowie. Signed.

I find myself having to state that homosexuality is not abnormal. Instead it is normal for it to obtain within the mammalian population. Societal suppression, the quest to exterminate it, is an evil we may relegate to history globally, along with slavery and the subordination of women.

How many latent gay people never simply be themselves in life, remain repressed because, since childhood they have been inwardly stigmatized, victim to societal suppression of homosexuality, perpetuated by religion, the essence of conservatism?

Incensed By Its Irrelevance, The Coalition’s Far Right Is Running Riot
Quote:
ANALYSIS: The eruption of the Safe Schools crusade in the right-wing of the Liberal Party is the last thing Australia, or Malcolm Turnbull needs, writes Ben Eltham.

On the face of it, you’d think a program that helps address bullying in high schools would be something all politicians would support.

Adolescence is a wonderful but fragile time. We know that many teenagers struggle with issues like depression and mental illness. These problems are exacerbated by bullying over issues like identity and sexuality.
...
So something like “Safe Schools”, an opt-in program for high school teachers and students seeking to better understand and address important issues like gender and sexuality, should be a no-brainer.

But brains are unfortunately in short supply when it comes to emblematic issues like sexuality – especially for the right-wing of the Liberal Party.

For the conservative culture warriors who constitute a key faction in the modern Liberal Party, queer sexuality and fluid gender identities are not merely a fact of modern life. They are an existential threat to conservative self-image.

And that is why the Safe Schools program has become a lightning rod for far right paranoia and hatred.

The issue exploded this week after a Liberal Party backbench revolt forced Malcolm Turnbull to call for an inquiry into the Safe Schools program, to be led by Education Minister Simon Birmingham.
To digress for a second:
Quote:
Right-wing Liberals celebrated, then lined up to attack the program in Parliament.

Liberal MP Brett Whitely claimed yesterday that Safe Schools was an “extraordinarily dangerous program” that sought to “stamp out gender entirely, to create confusion and doubt in children’s minds about their gender.”

Queensland LNP senator Barry O’Sullivan told the upper house that the program wanted to “deconstruct general norms that reflect society.”

Western Australian Liberal Andrew Hastie told the House on Tuesday that Safe Schools was “more about advancing ideology than equipping children with techniques to deal with bullying.” Hastie argued the program “pushes its own form of bulling by pressuring young children to conform to a particular view of sexuality.”

Even recalcitrant Labor senator Joe Bullock has had a swing.

And then there was Bernardi himself, who led the Coalition party room revolt this week. He compared the program to that bugbear of the conservative imagination, “cultural Marxism.” Last night he told Sky News that Safe Schools “intimidates” children to conforming to a “homosexual agenda.”
Wait, what? The troglodyte homophobes are not even making a pretence of "waiting for the outcome of the inquiry" before going on the attack? Well done you, on trashing any notions of procedural fairness or natural justice. You've all made a great case that any adverse finding should be regarded as patently unsafe. To continue:
Quote:
Bernardi, Hastie, Whitely, O’Sullivan, Bullock: in case you hadn’t noticed, every single one of these politicians is white, male and straight. Not a whole lot of diversity there.

Terms like “cultural Marxism”, “general norms” and “homosexual agenda” tell you exactly where this sudden upwelling of concern for our nation’s school students emanates from: a hatred for what they see as sexual deviance, and a thinly-veiled fear of the other.

As Jason Wilson has carefully established, the “cultural Marxism” label is a favoured term of the American far right, dripping with anti-Semitic overtones. Bernardi joins such figures as William Lind and Anders Breivik in his campaign against the “cultural Marxism” agenda.
...
The reason that a program like Safe Schools has been attacked is not just because of the forthcoming gay marriage plebiscite. It’s much deeper than that. It’s an expression of the howling rage of a group of right-wing culture warriors who know they are losing the war.

And that’s the problem for movement conservatives like Cory Bernardi. In the looking-glass paranoia of the conservative worldview, sexual diversity is a threat to be combated. Queer sexuality is profoundly destabilising to a fundamentalist worldview that still clings on to manufactured verities of heterosexuality, buttressed by an aggressive, evangelical Christianity.

From this paranoid perspective, accepting that there are kids in our schools questioning the norms of heterosexuality is tantamount to accepting that these views are up for debate – that they are not in fact the natural order of things, ordained by God and sacralised by scripture.

And there is a sense in which Bernardi and his fellow reactionaries are right: the hetero-normative worldview is indeed crumbling.
...
...that’s the obvious truth of the anti-Safe Schools campaign. This is not about protecting kids at all. This is about the prejudice of conservative minds.

The latest outbreak of culture skirmishing in the right-wing of the Liberal Party is the last thing Malcolm Turnbull needs. Middle Australia shows no inclination of joining Bernardi in his homophobic crusade. Worse, it confuses the government’s muddled messages still further.

Burden of proof is the obligation on somebody presenting a claim to provide evidence to support its truth (a warrant). Once evidence has been presented, it is up to any opposing "side" to show the evidence presented is not adequate. If claims were accepted without warrants, then every claim could simultaneously be claimed to be true.

Cory will be crying all the way to the UN.

And Lyle is deluding himself.

Safe Schools program: 32 more schools sign up and only one leaves after furore
Quote:
Only one school has withdrawn from Safe Schools since a review into the anti-bullying initiative thrust the program into the spotlight, and 32 more schools have signed up.
The review, ordered by Malcolm Turnbull, is on course to report to the federal education minister, Simon Birmingham, on Friday. When the review was announced in late February the program, which aims to stamp out homophobia and transphobia among students, had 495 participating schools. On Friday, it had 526.
“Since the announcement of the review there has been a spike in school membership nationally, with an additional 32 schools becoming registered and only one school deciding to withdraw from the program,” a spokeswoman for the Safe Schools program told Guardian Australia.
Only one other school has pulled out of the voluntary Safe Schools initiative in the two and a half years since its inception.
Cool. Not the effect the ideologue homophobes expected, was it?
Quote:
One of the program’s staunchest critics, Lyle Shelton from the Australian Christian Lobby, told Guardian Australia he was not surprised by the statistics.
Lyle, face reality for once in your life. You got to run your mass media scare campaign virtually unimpeded by politicians who should've known and led better, and it comprehensively failed. Given your position, if you're not surprised it failed, you shouldn't bother coming back to work next week.

It was your best chance, and it appears to have bombed.
Quote:
“Parents aren’t appraised of the full content of the program,” he said. “Once the public has fully grasped the extent of the program, I don’t see how it could continue.”
A failure of Lyle's imagination is not a valid argument.
Quote:
He has accused the Safe Schools Coalition, which runs the program, and the state and territory departments of education, which administer it, of not telling the full truth about its content.
And now they have an opportunity to evidence those claims to the review. I'd lay odds they won't be able to.

Nope, just ask the ACL, Safe Schools isn't needed becoz bullying, oh no no no...

Safe Schools LGBTI program workers receiving abuse, says union
Quote:
Workers delivering the Safe Schools Coalition anti-bullying program are receiving abusive emails, a union representing them has said.
The reports of frontline workers “copping abuse and hate mail for their roles in delivering the support program” were revealed by Australian Services Union South Australia and Northern Territory branch secretary Joseph Scales.
“We now have abusive behaviour perpetuated beyond the schoolyard and extended to the professionals and workers who are trying to combat just that,” he said.
...
Scales told Guardian Australia the abusive material included Bible verses, threats of eternal damnation to those delivering the program...
So who is responsible for whipping that religious homophobia up, one wonders?
Quote:
...and links to “vile” political speeches including George Christensen’s comments likening material linked to the anti-bullying program to predatory sexual grooming.
And what failure of political leadership is responsible for inspiring that, one wonders?
Quote:
Guardian Australia has previously reported that researchers behind the development of the Safe Schools program have also received abusive emails.
:sigh: More xtian love and tolerance...
Quote:
A Catholic Education Commission NSW spokesman told Guardian Australia that was because the material “focuses very narrowly on sexuality” and was “incompatible with Catholic teaching which emphasises love, mutual respect and personal dignity”.
But apparently failing to report child rapists to police, moving them around which allowed them to rape again, re-traumatising victims legally and financially, and obsfucation and extremely selective memory about all of this under cross-examination are totally compatible with 'em...

Yanno, I suddenly don't really care what they think is "compatible" with their god-dogma...

Really, are these people stupid? I don't like to label people stupid but.....all they are doing with abusive hate mails and threats is providing more evidence that Safe Schools Program is necessary. If they had just sat back, said nothing and fronted the review with a complete lack of bullying behaviour from their supporters it would have more impact, but no, to demonstrate that and anti-bullying program is not necessary they go out and....bully people?

If the program does get cancelled after this then we know who is running the country, the churches via their religious representatives in parliament!
