Default Safe schools program challenged by conservative MP's

Everyone's favourite conservative MP is at it again;

http://www.news.com.au/national/brea...ff5f3d44374912

Quote:
Conservative Liberal senator Cory Bernardi led the pack on Tuesday, presenting a petition to the Senate with 9499 signatures calling on the government to scrap all federal funding.
Apparently he thinks 9,499 signatures calling for the scrapping actually has significance in trying to cancel funding for a government program, I suggest we could easily get together ten times that many to cancel the government funding for RI programs in schools. 9,499 doesn't even represent a fraction of one percent of the population, seriously if that's all he can raise then tell him he's dreaming.

And of course the ACL has to have a say in it with it's usual ridiculous statements;

Quote:
The Australian Christian Lobby, which has campaigned hard against Safe Schools, says the program promotes chest-binding in girls and penis-tucking for boys.
This is why there are laws, this is obviously a lie, that's why we can't afford to relax the laws to give them the freedom to say what they want!

Quote:
Safe Schools wants to use the opportunity to dispel myths about the program, hitting back at Senator Bernardi's claims.

"I'm not entirely sure what Senator Bernardi is concerned about," national program director Sally Richardson told ABC Radio.

"If he was more familiar with the resources and read them in detail he would realise this is a very positive resource."
Suggest we have a press release and maybe an opposing petition to show him what a fool he is!

Cory Bernardi appears to think about gay sex more than gay people do. The man has a rather unhealthy obsession...

Seems our grand old parties (hehehe) still have plenty of dinosaurs. I shudder when I imagine Bill Shorten as PM, but at least he took a shot at Bernardi.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-02-2...k-says/7198300

Quote:
Safe Schools 'terrible, focused on homosexual issues', Labor senator Joe Bullock says
Quote:
Senator Bernardi has called on the Government to withdraw funding for the program, which he said was indoctrinating students.

He has faced criticism from Labor over his remarks and on Wednesday interjected while Mr Shorten was addressing media on the issue.

Senator Bernardi stated: "At least I'm honest, Bill."

Mr Shorten responded by saying: "At least I'm not a homophobe."

The Labor leader stood by his comments today, saying he did "in five seconds what Malcolm Turnbull hasn't done in five months".
The Safe Schools program is under review because Bernardi (via the ACL) presented a petition with 9,400 signing.

The Greens have organised a counter petition. So far almost 22,000 ...

A number of interesting, and usefully cross-linked, articles in New Matilda at the moment.

From this one, about e-mails being sent to MPs: one anti-email included the thought that:

"It is an thinly disguised attempt to indoctrinate our children and young people into accepting homosexuality and ‘gender diversity’ as normal"

While one's first reaction may be to ROFLMAO at the stupid ("it burns!"), there is a serious point here. Not in the statement but that it is made, pointing to the fact of how much of a gap there is in the essential premises of the arguments, or 'arguments' on both sides.

The thing is: it's not a "thinly disguised" effort to gain acceptance of gender diversity: that is its explicit purpose. It is striking that someone is so narrow in their thinking that they don't get this.

And Bernardi actually used the word "defunding"?

Calling to mind the totally dishonest right-wing US Planned Parenthood defunding campaign?

Yup. Sounds about right.

This is both:

- a clear window into how dirty the right-wing zealots will be prepared to play in the plebiscite lead-up, regardless of the damage to other people;
- a manifest example of supine failure of leadership:

Safe Schools: Turnbull issues warning to MPs, Federal Government releases review terms of reference
Quote:
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has urged backbenchers who have criticised the Safe Schools program to use "measured language" during the debate.
The taxpayer-funded program, aimed at helping lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and/or intersex (LGBTI) school students, is under review after a number of Coalition MPs expressed concerns.
The review has prompted heated remarks between politicians in Parliament, with the Federal Opposition Leader Bill Shorten referring to one conservative Senator as a homophobe.
Coalition MP George Christensen last night compared the scheme to the grooming of children by paedophiles, prompting calls for the Prime Minister to reprimand the Queensland politician.
When questioned about the comments, Mr Turnbull said those involved in the debate need to be careful.
"I encourage everybody who is discussing these issues to do so in very measured language," he said.
"And to consider very carefully the impact of the words they use on young people and on their families."
The acronym "STFU" seems to be missing from that lot...
