Default Language Peeves

Yeah, um, no, I mean like there's already a few in another thread, but I think we can find enough to fill a topic, without trying hard.

I've always got the local what-passes-for-media to fall back on. Good old Toowoomba Chronicle, what would I do without you?

And what that miracle baby was doing in the tree, we'll never know.

Sports fans, there's always a perennial favourite in football news: so-and-so is "sidelined with a hamstering injury", whatever that may be.

The phrase conjures up imagery of dark deeds in the locker room.

Fixed now, of course.

I was wondering what it was about hammerheads, that didn't turn out as it seemed.

I could fill a book with language peeves, let alone a thread. Come to think of it, probably about two-thirds of my output is about language in one way or another.

And now, the latest to make me foam at the mouth: "Wellness".

In modern usage, "wellness" appears to be the accepted term for "health", provided it is used by a woo-peddling shonk who cannot legally lay claim to being a properly-accredited health professional.

Antibiotics are "health", but aromatherapy is "wellness".
Orthopaedics - "health", crystals on chakras = "wellness".

The word is useful, as it can be taken to mean "Grasp your wallet tightly and get the fuck away".

I've posted about my dislike of "yeah no" many times, and have wondered why "yeah yeah" seems to have become a thing.

To my dismay, I recently heard twice in one day "yeah yeah no".

I guess I now have to look forward to "yeah yeah no no"?

I've read the thread and checked the linked source but I've no idea what this thread is all about, TIMB.
