New blog post: Prejudice Declared

http://reciprocity-giving-something-...-declared.html

An admission of guilt, a promise to do better, and how to be a better and more effective ally and advocate.

Getting in first Hack. Your new blog post is perfect. And yes, Nikki is amazing.

I remember learning something years ago. The privilege of being able to hide in society. To appear to be the privileged class. Some groups have it, some don't. Women of course don't have the same privilege walking down the street, that gay men do. Gender, for the most part can't be hidden.

Not to lessen the lived experience of gay men in society. Fuck, they were effectively illegal for hundreds of years.

And in news of 'This just appeared in my news feed on FB 31 minutes ago'.

Quote:
Colour Blind

Sometimes I encounter this comment- or one similar- 'I don't see colour and race, we are all just one human race.' At first glance such a comment seems quite innocent, perhaps even fair and noble. Look a bit closer though and what it actually reveals is dismissal of the cultural and ethnic features that make us so different- culturally, spiritually, philosophically. To me, it sounds like 'your cultural and racial identity is not important to me therefore it is not important'. As Aboriginal people our racial and cultural heritage is inseparable from our identity- it influences everything we do, know and perceive. We cherish it. We don't wish to abandon what makes us unique and just be 'like everyone else'. I think the inability to relate to the significance that culture and race have to minority groups, comes from the fact that many white Australians are not directly or significantly influenced by a cultural heritage or distinct ethnicity. They possess a sense of national pride and identity- but for many, the traditional customs, ethnicity and culture of their ancestors has been lost and is no longer relevant to their concept of self. They are just ‘people’. Difference does not automatically have to mean division. We can celebrate and share what makes us unique. Variety enriches our world and makes it a fascinating and colourful place to discover.
Sameness does not mean equality and I think some people struggle to separate the two. If you give every student in a class (including a blind student) the same book to read for homework, is that fair? In theory it is fair and equal- every student is being treated the same, regardless of their differences. The blind student who requires a brail or audio version has not been able to engage at all.

In order to give everyone equal opportunities we need to adequately address and provide for the differences- not pretend they do not exist or are insignificant.

I still have problems with the word "dismissal". It is more an error of omission than a dismissal. I don't disagree, I am just saying. That was my problem with having a view that I was "colour blind". The intent is to look at a person, without regard to skin tone or gender or whatever. It is not a dismissal of any disadvantage, prejudice or problem a particular group may have to suffer.
Most people with a heart and thinking brain are well aware of prejudice or disadvantage, even though as a more "privileged group" [eg white heterosexual males] they may experience much less in the way of prejudice and deprivation due to bigotry.

It think it is important, in term of raising awareness, we do not insult those whose wishes and sentiments are basically sympathetic to the fight against bigotry and privilege.

But hack said it better in his blog.

Dear Hack,

Photobuffering has begun charging to post pics to 3rd parties.

Is it Imgur.com time?

Ha!

Something we should talk about, perhaps.

You and I may never have crossed paths were it not for Gould and his NOMA bollocks.

It is, in fact, how I ended up on RDF. I got into reading more about biology (having started in physics) and the spat between Dawkins and Gould was a stepping-stone.

Time for a record?
