Isn't it all kind of pointless though? Swearing on something saying you are going to tell the truth? People lie all the time. And after swearing as well. Surely this is really only around for contempt of court issues.

Why tell everyone at the very beginning 'If you lie you could be held in contempt of court, do you understand?'
Mr Wolty. U are too logical. The world does not work that way!

That, more or less, is the point of an affirmation. The whole bible thing is a religious and social holdover.

Apropos of not much, but just a quirky thing for the day, the Commonwealth Criminal Code Act 1995 creates various offences of providing false or misleading information to the Commonwealth; but it is a defence to the offence if one hasn't been told it is a possible offence at the time the information is sought.

The wording of the affirmation is:

"I solemnly and sincerely declare and affirm that the evidence I shall give shall be the truth"

We lawyers do like to maintain our ceremonial traditions. I like your idea though, it has the advantage of being simpler.

Is it just me, or does that wording sound suspiciously like the wording required to activate the marauders map from Harry Potter?

Mischief managed.

A wiser man than me once said this:

" it is the man who makes us believe the oath, not the oath which makes us believe the man"

An oath, wherever taken and to whomever it is given, is only as binding as the honour of the promisor allows it to be.
