Default Caged Ingenuity

Here I sit, facing the daunting prospect of setting up a Win10 lappie to Black Tower specifications ("Piss Off, Cortana" and a few other tweaks), wondering what M$oft-imposed, un-switch-off-able cyberperving the Cremators' Update will bring, and having just returned one brand-new lappie to the store for a refund (rhymed with "Racer", and turned to a paperweight on about the third boot-up)...

So this story of human triumph over technology impressed me to the point of a grin: El Reg Linky

We are impressed by five prisoners in the US who built two personal computers from parts, hid them behind a plywood board in the ceiling of a closet, and then connected those computers to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction's (ODRC) network to engage in cybershenanigans.

Presumably if they'd been able to use wi-fi they might also have evaded detection. Tracing a cable is a pretty low-tech way to get busted.

In their position, they are all probably black hats.

I know that super-hero feeling you get from being able to solve technical problems and implement solutions. But I've been more in technophobe mode lately, having watched Monday's 4 Corners, Mr Robot and Black Mirror, I'm more inclined to fear, rather than cheer, the black hats.

I had a laptop that rhymed with "Racer" a little over a decade ago. In those days they were a bit bigger and heavier, so they made good doorstops.

I've been using one of that brand for about five years now, with no problem but deteriorating battery.

But go-ogle "Black screen of death" and the brand name... sheesh, never again for us.
