ISIS are basically at war with everyone, including Sunni Muslims who fail to accept the ISIS understanding and practice of Islam. By logical fiat therefore, there aren't really any minority groups in Syria. Indeed there is some evidence that Christians are being allowed to live under Isis rule, under certain conditions like these from a xtian news source

http://www.christianpost.com/news/is...meland-144533/

or here from conservative paper

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...ing-Islam.html

Christians are actually far safer under ISIS than Shiites, atheists, Kurds or liberal Sunnis.

Against that there's this charming poster

http://shoebat.com/wp-content/upload....jpg-large.jpg

The logic of the governments reasoning is flawed. Its simply a lie but they can't come out and say the truth. 'We don't want another 8000 Muslims in Australia' and that to me at least is a far more complex and interesting discussion, i kind of wish Abbott would just say it outright.

Whilst I agree, as I said I'd like to get the facts rather than media beat ups and there seems to be a dearth of factual information at present.
What facts would you be looking for that makes any difference? What fact determines that we should pick refugees based on their religious views?

The bigots are running around saying the muslims are using this to flood western society with muslims. Frankly if they are fleeing death who cares even if it were true?

Burden of proof is the obligation on somebody presenting a claim to provide evidence to support its truth (a warrant). Once evidence has been presented, it is up to any opposing "side" to show the evidence presented is not adequate. If claims were accepted without warrants, then every claim could simultaneously be claimed to be true.

History isn't written by the victors. It's written by the people with the time machines.

Whether what is reported by the media is actual policy or hyperbole.

Ah, so you are not talking about weather it would be good policy or not, just wether it has been seriously proposed? Facts on the ground, this has been proposed by Corie Bernardi and Eric Abetz and considered by Julie Bishop.

Quote:
Christians in the Middle East are “the most persecuted group in the world” and should be given priority in the refugee resettlement process, government Senate leader Eric Abetz has argued.
Full Article and video...

However today's announcement doesn't seem to have taken that up. Instead they have opted not to include unattached men. Only women, children and families will be taken up. There is something wonk about that but I won't object. And we are taking in 12.000.

I think its a clever move. They dont want male muslims who might radicalise locals or engage in illegal activities in Australia but by taking Muslim women and children and families they are hoping to minimise that risk without being accused of Islamaphobia.

12000 is better than 10000 and thats 12000 more than Saudi arabia and all the gulf states are taking...combined!

I note that we decry christians (for instance) for "benchmarking against the worst" when it comes to comparative religious violence, charity etc.

It therefore logically follows that we shouldn't, either. Why would we want to take any reference points from countries we fundamentally disagree with?
