Wink Adelaide Atheist

Hi All,

I have been an Atheist all my life, never even questioned it - only questioned why everyone else wasn't.

I have always avoided being a member of any Atheist group because I sort of feel it is hypocritical. I think it's doing what the religions do, an exclusive group that says we are better than everyone else etc. etc. Hey! Maybe we are

The other thing I have avoided is using the word Atheist. I do not believe in God or anything spiritual, so I am an Atheist, but I feel that the word has a hostile sound, is harsh, cold. I am an Atheist, but I do not hate anyone for their beliefs. I know that Atheists don't feel that the word is bad, but I get the impression that religious people think it means something negative and hateful - that we hate them all.

I am just myself, an Atheist, but I do not want to convert or try to change anyone’s thinking to be the same as mine.....who would I argue with???

So, I guess I am trying to join your group because I can talk to you guys, without feeling like I am trying to convert anyone. Plus I generally find that Atheists are intelligent, deep thinking people and I enjoy good robust conversations.

I see religion as a drug. It's just another mechanism that people use to cope with life, why am I here, life is hard, why is it hard etc. etc. I would categorise religion with any other drug that people use to numb their brains and give them a bit of time out from reality. I would also lump the absolute rubbish that they show on TV in this category - I am not a fan of Rupert Murdoch and his wilful campaign to dumb down the viewing audience so he can make more money out of them, while giving them less.

I think that is a summary of me and the sort of views I have. I hope I can fit in here.

Thanks for listening.

Fi

Hi, Finix.

This is a message sent to all who find their way to these forums.

We like people, and we like facts too!

We're friendly but we're skeptical, and if somebody calls for proof, it's not an accusation. Only the strong ideas thrive here: we try to respect people. (We do not tolerate personal abuse.)

You may already have visited these other handy places:
* New Member Information
* Welcome from AFA president
* For those interested in learning, I recommend the Atheism Resource Thread maintained by Fearless.
* And a quick look at our reserved spot for belief-based discussion, Fantasy Island, includes The Great Big List, a sort-of "things we've seen before" for those of faith, and general rules of argument for the forum.

If you've got questions, please ask. Moderators have red name tags, but many of our friendly people may have the answers you need.

Enjoy the forums. We hope to see plenty from you in discussions.

Have fun.

Hi Fi,

Welcome to the forums. I'm sure you'll find these fellow atheists don't necessarily have the same thinking you might expect.

Anyway, I hope you'll have fun, gain much and perhaps even change your mind with good reason ;¬D

G'day finix and welcome to the forum. No exclusivity or elitism around here "I am atheist" is the answer to only one question, all else is up for grabs. Though you may have to support any other claims you make, cheers
