Default Victorian Man Gave Himself Cyanide Poisoning Eating Apricot Kernels To Fight Cancer

LINKY

Quote:
Despite what alternative medicine and natural health advocates would have you believe, taking apricot kernel extract as a cancer treatment is a very, very bad idea.

This reminder comes off the back of the case of a 67 year old Victorian man, who legit developed cyanide poisoning from ingesting apricot kernel extract.

The issue came to light after they noticed that he had abnormally low levels of oxygen (hypoxia) in his body when he was under anaesthetic for routine surgery. Blood tests showed that he had high levels of cyanide in his body.

The man explained that he had been taking two teaspoons of home-made apricot kernel extract every day for the past five years in addition to three tablets of Novodalin - a herbal fruit kernel supplement.

Apricot kernels contain cyanide, and along with the herbal supplement, the man was taking nearly four grams of cyanide every day, which is enough to raise blood cyanide to around 25 times above acceptable levels. That's enough to cause coma, and death.

Despite the warnings from doctors of the risks, and his cyanide levels dropping to a "safe" level after three days off his self-administered treatment, the man went straight back to taking them after getting home from hospital.

To be fair, it will probably kill his cancer [as well as him, of course!].

Around 1970 I read this health fanatic cheaply made book on the Hunza people in mountain valleys of Pakistan, claiming for them extraordinary longevity, commonly 130+ years, 139, like the mythical Old Testament patriarchs.

This book was promoting apricot kernel oil, for ingestion and for the skin. It said that plus the mineral spring water they drink accounted for their great age, along with the mountain air. I didn't get into apricot kernel oil myself, but I'm betting our hero believes in the Hunza apricot oil myth.

This region could be the Shangri-La of legend.

Wiki:

Quote:
The longevity of Hunza people has been noted by some,[8] but others refute this as a longevity myth and cite a life expectancy of 53 years for men and 52 for women although with a high standard deviation.[9] There is no evidence that Hunza life expectancy is significantly above the average of poor, isolated regions of Pakistan. Claims of health and long life were almost always based solely on the statements by the local Mir (king). The only author who had significant and sustained contact with Burusho people was John Clark, who reported that they were overall unhealthy.[10]

It's a simple misunderstanding. The apricot kernel is meant to go up the rectum...no one really knows why...just for fun, probably and no harm done. He just got the wrong end of the stick, easily done.
