Default Multifunctional compounds for detection, imaging and treatment of Alzheimer's

(Put it here as I don't think it's ready for trials yet.)

From the HKBU release:

Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) Chemistry scholars have invented a new class of multifunctional cyanine compounds that can be used for detection, imaging and thus treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. The discovery has been granted four US patents and a patent by the Chinese government.
By making use of the proprietary compounds, the HKBU team, on one hand, has proved that the cyanine compounds applied onto a “nano”-detection platform can quantify trace amounts of Alzheimer’s disease related protein biomarkers present in human fluids such as cerebrospinal fluid, serum, saliva, and urine. It is a rapid, low-cost and ultrasensitive detection assay. On the other hand, the compounds also serve as an imaging agent for in vivo detection and monitoring of disease progression and understanding the disease pathogenesis as well as a drug candidate for treatment of the disease.

Chemical Science journal:
Ultra-sensitive detection of protein biomarkers for diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease (FREE)

From another source, it seems that, if viable, it will cost a lot less and take a far shorter time for diagnosis, i.e. US$380 and 16 hours currently down to US$1-3 and half an hour.

What, indeed, is an atheist? He is one who destroys delusions which are harmful to humanity in order to lead men back to nature, to reality, to reason. Baron d'Holbach

If we go back to the beginnings of things, we shall always find that ignorance and fear created the gods; that imagination, rapture and deception embellished them; that weakness worships them; that custom spares them; and that tyranny favours them in order to profit from the blindness of men.
