Default GERMANY: Safe, Reliable, Geothermal? It's A Crackup!

In September 2007, seven boreholes were drilled for heat supply of the historic town hall of the city of Staufen which is located in the southwest of Baden-Württemberg, in the tectonic transition zone between the Upper Rhine Graben and the Black Forest (Goldscheider and Bechtel 2009). Two weeks after the drillings, neighbouring residents reported first cracks in their buildings, which rapidly propagated (Fig. 3b). In two published status reports, the Geological Survey of Baden-Württemberg (LGRB) provided evidence of the fact that these ground uplifts had been induced by the geothermal drillings (LGRB 2010, 2012). Initialisation of swelling processes by earthquakes was excluded (Sass and Burbaum 2012). With a final depth of 163 m, the drillings penetrated the anhydrite-bearing Keuper formation. Anhydrite turns into gypsum when it comes into contact with water. The transformation process is accompanied by a volume increase of up to 61% (Butscher et al. 2016a).
See where this is going?
