Default "Super > God" Priest

ABC

Quote:
A Catholic priest celebrating 25 years in the bush is attributing superannuation to the dropping number of churchgoers across Australia.

Father Michael Lowcock, described by federal MP Bob Katter as "the most influential person in north-west Queensland", has led the Catholic church in Mount Isa since 1993.

He said over the years his seven parishes, stretching across an area of around 200,000 square kilometres, have lost a third of their congregants a change he believes is linked to superannuation.

"Superannuation is a great idea, but it's changed people's idea of religion because you become a person who makes your future secure by your superannuation," Fr Lowcock said.

"You retire now with a million or two million, and so you've organised all of that yourself. You don't need God for that."

At least he's correct in one aspect, you don't need god for that. But how in satan's scaly arse, does he link dropping church numbers to superannuation?

@Fie: A bloke who believes in the bureaucracy of saints and the infallibility of a succession of dotards in frocks... and you ask why he believes something else illogical?

Good argument there, if you are destitute and desperate and miserable you are a much better target. Oh for the good old days when a little charity (emphasis on little) and a visit from the vicar was all it took to keep them in the pews.

How dare people be independent enough not to need you any more.

Wonder if he dares take that thought any further?

If were the priest, I wouldn't have said this:
Quote:
"I still remember going to Dajarra school, and one of the teachers announced they were leaving," he said.

"This little kid comes up and puts their hands around [my] legs and says, 'You're not leaving too, are you?'

Yeah, it's unrealistic for most people to rack that up just in super. With property investment in Sydney it's not that hard if you bought a house a few decades ago and stuck to a plan. I betcha his super isn't crash hot and he has regrets.

It is possible that with financial security and superannuation, people are less likely to attend churches.

However, it is not always conclusive that churchgoers rely on financial security to keep themselves happy. It is possible that there exists continual churchgoers with financial security.
