Yeah but the Ori and the Ascended are locked in stasis pitted against each other in an unwinnable struggle. That leaves us replicators to get on with it.

Indeed! Daniel Dare. I blame the script-writer!

As concious beings, we are free to create our own purpose. Our species has survived only through a series of fortunate accidents, and each of us are, in the scale of the world, insignificant.

If you do not choose to employ this brief state of consciousness in a manner that you, as a human who is reliant on serotonin and dopamine to weight decisions, someone else will exploit you to their own end.

A Christian asked me that question (although it was rhetorical) when I became an atheist. I said "does a bird wake in the morning and wonder what it's purpose is? It just goes about happily being a bird".

Really it's only because we have self awareness that we think about it.

Even the concept of "significance" is up for grabs. We are significant to some set of other human beings and in good way and bad ways to other life forms we share the biosphere with. Within the memeosphere each of us can have significant impact if we create viral memes.

On a universal scale our biosphere and memeosphere have no impact at all on how the life of the universe plays out.
