Hi,
I'm becoming slightly obsessed with religion. I've had a few discussions with religious people and it always ends up with the person getting REALLY defensive or offensive. I've not heard yet a reasonable answer from any thiest that could change my mind. Checking out YouTube vids, it always seems to me that the rational and reasonable argument always comes from the athiest camp. Why is this? Anyway, I'm here to talk about this stuff with you lot and hopefully can learn something along the way. |

Hi, jonBuckner.
This is a message sent to all who find their way to these forums. We like people, and we like facts too! We're friendly but we're skeptical, and if somebody calls for proof, it's not an accusation. Only the strong ideas thrive here: we try to respect people. (We do not tolerate personal abuse.) You may already have visited these other handy places: * New Member Information * Welcome from AFA president * For those interested in learning, I recommend the Atheism Resource Thread maintained by Fearless. * And a quick look at our reserved spot for belief-based discussion, Fantasy Island, includes The Great Big List, a sort-of "things we've seen before" for those of faith, and general rules of argument for the forum. If you've got questions, please ask. Moderators have red name tags, but many of our friendly people may have the answers you need. Enjoy the forums. We hope to see plenty from you in discussions. Have fun.

Hi Jon, welcome. Briefly, the religious have a huge emotional investment in their beliefs and integrate them into their personalities. Hence the fallacy that an attack on any ideas they may have is an attack on them, which is a fallacy of reasoning.

![]() People get defensive because admitting you maybe wrong is hard. People would much rather accept things like government conspiracies and build eleborate fantasises then admit they're wrong. Religion is the same. People invest their whole lives into their beliefs, it determines their actions and how they live so when the idea is challenged - their life is challenged. In their eyes anyway. |

Hi Jon
Why are you "obsessed" with religion? Are you a believer trying to find a reason to hang on? Or are you looking for more in your life? What sort of answers are you after? Life the Universe and Everything? Welcome aboard and I hope you find what you are looking for
