What caused you to begin to doubt? How deeply ingrained were your beliefs? Did you feel guilt over your doubts and what were your feelings at questioning the authority of the sect? Did you feel more confident about questioning as you got older? For example, in my own case I was initially embarrassed at being expelled from Sunday School for something I hadn't known I'd done, nor actually done, but by the time I'd walked the three blocks home I felt relieved that I was free from having to listen to any more of what I'd come to see as superfluous crap in order to play basketball on Saturdays. One didn't need to be superstitious, I realized, to be humane and generally accepting of others. It seemed to me that Christians were extremely judgemental and unforgiving, despite their purported beliefs. |
