Welcome.

Following this experience I have formed the opinion that it is complacent for atheists to simply enjoy their atheism in silence,
I don't actually allow others to decide what I should or should not do and avoid militants of all stripes. If that makes me complacent, El fucking stiffo (no offence)

I guess we may need to agree to differ.
Hello Odd!

Interesting opinion, I can see where you are coming from in the sense that religious fundies will continue with their BS unless we stand up and become active against them because change only happens if you do something about it however I can also see Seamus's point..we should be able to be as active as we want. If being complacent is what others want to do, that's their prerogative.

Nice first post

Seamus, I think what Dan is trying to say is somewhat of a catch 22 but still valid. No one should tell us what to do (like the religious do on a Sunday morning at our front doors and in Sunday school) because we have the right to lack of belief. Ironically in order to be able to have the freedom of a lack of belief, sometimes we need to get up and get active and tell someone to fuck off so we can go back to bed (or to get out of legislation or state schools or science textbooks).

Hi odd,

Thank you for your introduction and welcome. Sometimes I share your view on complacency, then remind myself not to form judgements based on insufficient information.

Thanks rayne and fataardvark

I admit it does read a little bossy... new kid rolls into town and tells everyone they are complacent!, didn't mean to come across like that. I was referring to myself essentially, I came to the conclusion that I was being complacent and decided to do something about it.

However, as a group we have much to gain from getting the concepts out there. Many people have done what I did (just walked away from religion and spent 25 years minding my own business), if someone I knew had spoken about atheism 20 years ago I would have joined a group like this sooner, more members is more funding and more political pull.

That was my point, the more of us talking about it, the more normal it becomes.

I'll nail my colours to Odd's flag pole. I to have been guilty of falling for the whole "the religious deserve respect" meme. I have kept silent while others with religious agendas have trampled over me and others because their shit is better than mine. Well enough is enough. I will not concede one millimetre and I also want back the ground lost. You don't get to pull out your religious trump card every time you feel the the tide is not sufficiently in your favor. You can put your case and it should carry no extra weight because it is "gods will". I'm sure many here feel that way also. But we will never be counted all the time we are silent.
