Default Catholic church attempting to block family planning reform in Philippines

Caught a really interesting podcast, on the attempts to fund contraception for poverty stricken Filipino women and the fight by the catholic church to block it.

Really recommend it if you have the time, covers several issues, including the dangers to women from making abortion illegal.

News article: http://www.irinnews.org/Report/95776...ning-with-cash

Quote:
MANILA, 2 July 2012 (IRIN) - The government of the Philippines is aiming to save its “failed” national family planning programme and drastically cut maternal deaths by spending 500 million pesos (almost US$12 million) on contraceptives in 2012, a move bitterly opposed by the influential Roman Catholic Church.

The Department of Health has said it will use the money to purchase "family planning commodities and supplies” - an official euphemism for condoms, intra-uterine devices (IUDs), birth control pills and other contraceptives - and distribute them on a large scale for the first time in largely underfunded community centres across the country.

It is a controversial decision that even public health officials and family planning advocates admit may not be carried out by local officials wary of angering the Church or losing the votes of Catholic supporters.
Kudos to the President for having the balls to stand up for reform against an obvious majority and the threats of the Catholic heavyweights.

Hopefully they can get this up and running, despite the catholic church.
The sad thing is that while the church jumps up and down thumping its chest, women are once again the ones who bear the brunt of their stupidity.
And they dont give a shit

They know that it is only because you are a woman that you do not understand that it is for your own good.

With around 95 million people, many homeless and living in poverty, they badly need the Reproductive Health Bill that is proposed.

When I was in Manilla last year I took this photo of a banner on a catholic church:

We also visited a tip where people scrounge for food and anything of value they can sell. Try and imagine the smell as well! For some families the tip is their only source of income:

When you see something like this with your own eyes you just have to say "Fuck the catholic church for their contibution to overpopulation "

I want to say something really smart but I can only think of how much I'd like to punch that smug git in the red dress in the face.

I do believe George has something to say relevant to this matter:

Headline, Manila Bulletin 19.12.12

"God Will Finish War"

Philippines "Reproductive Health bill" passed in Senate and Congress.
Catholic prelates disheartened saying "God has a good plan. He tolerated the loss of the battle to purify all of us. It's sad but God will finish the war for us. We did our best."
