A four-year-old cancer patient's parents will be forced to allow her to receive a blood transfusion despite their religious objections.
Supreme Court Justice Richard White ordered on Friday that the girl receive life-saving treatment for her leukaemia, News Limited reports.
The SA girl's parents are strict Jehovah's Witnesses and had objected to the blood transfusion.
News Ltd reports that paediatric oncologist Petra Ritchie warned the girl would die within weeks without it.

That's rather disturbing.

The concept of an almighty omnipotent being feeling sad becasue a kid played with a toy is weird. But it is good to know you can make Jehovah happy by throwing a toy in the bin...hmmm...seems we can control the emotions of god, that makes us pretty powerful!

I might just go and make god sad for a while...just because I can!

JEHOVAH'S Witnesses, whose faith forbids them from blood transfusions, recover from heart surgery faster and with fewer complications than those who do get blood, in a study that may change thinking on current practice.
Patients who are Jehovah's Witnesses had better survival rates, shorter hospital stays, fewer additional operations for bleeding and spent fewer days in the intensive care unit than those who received blood transfusions during surgery, a study in the Archives of Internal Medicine shows.
Members of the Jehovah's Witness faith undergo extensive blood conservation before surgery, including red blood-cell boosting erythropoietin drugs, iron and B-complex vitamins to guard against anaemia. The practice offered a ''unique natural experiment'' for scientists to study the short and long-term effects of the blood management strategy and may point to ways to reduce need for transfusions, researchers said.
''How we care for Jehovah's Witness patients with this pretty extreme blood conservation doesn't put a patient at increased risk,'' said Colleen Koch, a study author and professor of anaesthesiology at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. ''Perhaps it needs to be examined more closely applying some of these practices to our routine cardiac surgery patients.''

Interesting research if it proves to be correct in the long term. Maybe there is something to be learned here. Of course the JWs aren't avoiding the blood transfusion because of any medical benefit, but rather from their stupid interpretation of the bible. Any benefit is incidental, but nevertheless worth investigating further.

There might be a selection bias for JWs being in a hospital in the first place. That might skew the results there a tad.

For sure, there is benefit of having your own blood transfused to you rather than someone else's.

Bloody expensive though.

Jdubs can't transfuse their own blood as they believe once blood is shed [gone out of the body] it is not to be reused.
An interesting fact is jdubs say some fractions of blood may be used but whole blood cannot! What nonsense to pick and choose, but that's the jdubs for ya, always picking and choosing what suits them. Ugh and that Sparlock video...there's a whole facebook page dedicated to Sparlock by exjdubs...they have put posters up at Kingdom Halls saying Save Sparlock...it's hilarious [if the whole thing wasn't so disgusting]. However the Sparlock video gives you some idea of the mind games the org or Borg as I like to refer to them operate.
