I'm just gonna be honest.. That mother is a fucking bitch.
Stay strong, both you and Mrs Pot.

Hey O.T,
Whilst it sucks eggs that mum and sister had to be so horrible, hopefully the 'coming out' can be a weight lifted. It's draining to pretend to be something you're not and hide who you are. So I hope your wife takes comfort in that at the very least. I'm not sure where you both are, but perhaps you may like to view what social happenings are possibly coming up in your area? It may help to be around like-minded people and potentially meet new friends

Congrats to your wife for standing up for her beliefs and not giving into peer pressure or abuse. She's an inspiration to us all.

Hi rayne
This is a message sent to all who find their way to these forums. We like people, and we like facts too! We're friendly but we're skeptical, and if somebody calls for proof, it's not an accusation. Only the strong ideas thrive here: we try to respect people. (We do not tolerate personal abuse.) You may already have visited these other handy places: * New Member Information * Welcome from AFA president * For those interested in learning, I recommend the Atheism Resource Thread maintained by Fearless. * And a quick look at our reserved spot for belief-based discussion, Fantasy Island, includes The Great Big List, a sort-of "things we've seen before" for those of faith, and general rules of argument for the forum. If you've got questions, please ask. Moderators have red name tags, but many of our friendly people may have the answers you need. Enjoy the forums. We hope to see plenty from you in discussions. Have fun.

Another reminder that we are powerless to control other people actions. My child self wants to go over there and just scream at the mother and sister to set them straight. This story makes me mad and sad. Its amazing the strength she has shown to stand up for her principles.

All the best to you and your wife mate. Such a harrowing family upheaval to endure. In time it may be remembered as a great liberation in your wife's life.

I always worry about making 'trite' remarks or offering 'droll' sentiments when posting in threads that affect me in a similar fashion to this one. That written I do offer feelings of encouragement; that which doesn't 'add' to your life is better 'subtracted' from it.
I have long held the opinion that despite the axiom 'you cannot choose family' that you can refrain from acknowledging them. I certainly respect your wife's stand against what must be years of assumed conformity (perhaps oppression). Anyway; I offer you both my congratulations. Non-conformity is NOT easy. 4lan

If there was one proof that religion is toxic, it is with the way religion breaks up the love between families. I don't think your brave lady had any real option OT. Love cannot be totally unquestioning or absolute, and so your wife and her family had to pay the butcher's bill of separation at the behest of irrational beliefs.
A sad, but illuminating story in many ways. If there is any comfort in this, your wife now has a family of over 4000 who are on her side. One can only hope that sister and mother have an outbreak of reason that will reconcile the differences between them. Last edited by Darwinsbulldog; 22nd April 2012 at 09:22 AM. |

If it's any consolation, remember: "time wounds all heels". O.T.'s M.I.L. may one day feel the pain and shame of abandoning her daughter. I think it is important for Mrs. O.T. not to reciprocate with anger or resentment, but to try and accept that Mum is a victim of indoctrination. And perhaps time heals all wounds too!
