Hello hello
![]() I'm a relatively new atheist... I didn't exactly make the choice to be one it just kind of snuck up on me. My fiance is what i would call a militant atheist and our dinner conversation rarely strays from religion (or the latest android phone) I am yet to tell my religious family that I'm an atheist, though I'd say they already know i just havent said the words out loud yet they are ever hopeful that i will go back to god. My brother wanted me to attend a religious conference in Brisbane next week so I could see that religion isnt all bad but I had to tell him that i couldnt go as i had spent FAR TOO MUCH on books at the Melbourne Atheist Convention ![]() I was hoping to see if there were any others in my area that I could maybe meet up with. Most of my friends dont go to church but still look down on me for being an "atheist"

Hi, Flowerrellik.
This is a message sent to all who find their way to these forums. We like people, and we like facts too! We're friendly but we're skeptical, and if somebody calls for proof, it's not an accusation. Only the strong ideas thrive here: we try to respect people. (We do not tolerate personal abuse.) You may already have visited these other handy places: * New Member Information * Welcome from AFA president * For those interested in learning, I recommend the Atheism Resource Thread maintained by Fearless. * And a quick look at our reserved spot for belief-based discussion, Fantasy Island, includes The Great Big List, a sort-of "things we've seen before" for those of faith, and general rules of argument for the forum. If you've got questions, please ask. Moderators have red name tags, but many of our friendly people may have the answers you need. Enjoy the forums. We hope to see plenty from you in discussions. Have fun.

Actually he was just really disappointed that i couldnt come. He truly believes in god and wants me to go to heaven. Its so hard having such different views from my family. I feel like I'm letting him down by not going but its just not what i believe. In my younger years i tried going to church etc but its never rung true for me.

Hi Flowerrwllik,
It is often a very hard thing to be surrounded by woo-mongers, especially if they are family. ![]() But we now all know as a physical, mental and emotional experience [thanks to the GAC] what it is like to be surrounded by 4000 atheists! I don't like crowds, even atheist ones, but comfort is a relative thing. At the GAC I somewhat enjoyed my discomfort, if there is such a thing. In a world that is mostly deluded by religion, where governments and communities bow to imaginary friends and masters in a sado-maschistic manner, it was rather nice to be immersed in godless humanity, if only for a weekend.
