Default Roland Joins AFA Forums.

Hi All,
I'm a mature aged guy (still married by some miracle...and I don't mean religious) who probably has always had an inquiring mind and always thought that religion was not quite "rigi-dig" even at Sunday school as a 5 yr-old.
I thought the images of suffering on the cross were awful and related to nothing logical.
In my early twenties I tried to become a Catholic in order to permanently acquire the attentions of the most beautiful girl I had ever met. However, this did not come to pass, mainly because I could not become a Catholic after all. The lesson I gained from that little foray into religion was that it was divisive and dictatorial and only caused pain and rejection to someone who simply wanted to love and be loved.
I also found that I could not do the required mental and emotional gymnastics, nor repeat the required spiel with any sincerity (not that sincerity seemed to be an essential....they just wanted you to say the "right" things and do the "right" things at the right time).
I was also always sceptical of anything paranormal or unscientific.

Initially I found Bryan Paterson's Faithworks blog to be an interesting motivation to contribute and argue, but I have to say that the level of personal abuse directed at me, combined with the constant wild distortions of "logic" and deleting of any telling posts that were difficult to counter, have made me less interested in contributing lately. I mean, why bash your head against a brick wall?

It was, in fact, ironically, Bryan's recent reference to AFA that made me look it up, so here I am.

Glad you could join us, Roland.

This is a message sent to all who find their way to these forums.

We like people, and we like facts too!

We're friendly but we're skeptical, and if somebody calls for proof, it's not an accusation. Only the strong ideas thrive here: we try to respect people. (We do not tolerate personal abuse.)

If you're an AFA member and need your membership status recognised in forum access, please send a Private Message to Admin, including the name on your AFA membership.

You may already have visited these other handy places:
* New Member Information
* Welcome from AFA president
* For those interested in learning, I recommend the Atheism Resource Thread maintained by Fearless.
* And a quick look at our reserved spot for belief-based discussion, Fantasy Island, includes Wolty's List, a sort-of "things we've seen before" for those of faith.

If you've got questions, please ask. Moderators have red name tags, but many of our friendly people may have the answers you need.

Enjoy the forums. We hope to see plenty from you in discussions.

Have fun.

Hi Roland. As always the best arguments for atheism come from theists.

Oh, the irony of Bran the Flake being a motivator for people to pop over to our forums...

Welcome Roland - enjoy your time here. Hopefully there will be minimal bashing of your head against a brick wall.

Congratulations on finding us Roland - Bryan has been working tirelessly on AFA publicity lately and we're reaping the benefits. *waves at Bryan*

Well, actually, people like yourself tired of circular arguments, illogical positions and flat out bullshit are benefitting by finding your way here. Gotta love that!

Look forward to seeing you round the place.

Oh, and remember to wear the epithet of "troll" with pride, when it is bestowed by such a silly person as Bryan Patterson
