Default R18+ plus game rating

I was wondering what people believe should be done about the game rating debate happening at the moment.

I'm not over 18 so I can't really comment aside from saying that if I was over 18 I would very much wish for a new R18 rating. Anyone here disagree?

Some people are saying that if we have an R18 rating we will have games in Australia that are extremely violent. I would just like to stress that this is not the case, sure some more explicit games will come in but you will find that the majority will just be games that are currently MA and should really be upped to a R18 rating.

Yes, there should clearly be a rating for games regarded to be 'adult only'. The average gamer is an adult, and it is ridiculous to currently censor games that are made for the average user.

Additionally, I don't personally think that any form of media should be censored unless there is significant evidence of harm (for which there is little, except for things like child pornography).

Games are educational tools for killing zombies and what will happens when the zombie apocalypse arrives? Australia will be the only western democracy unprepared and we will be the ones that suffer for the short sightedness of those in power.

I love how they tried to ban the AvP game cause its "violent" but allow a game with strong christian themes in which you get to kill unbaptised babies, without any opposition

Yeah it's ridiculous that we don't have an R rating for video games. I don't know what we can do about it. Voting for the far left political parties obviously, but that's about it. Unfortunately it's just not an issue major political parties care about, or think is worth votes. A really dedicated person should start a campaign - create a website and contact all the major video game distributors and developers in Australia - get funding from them and put lots of advertising for the issue everywhere. Definitely achievable, but it would require a very politically savvy person with lots of time on their hands.

They seem to forget that parents who own the consoles can enable a feature that doesnt allow certain rated games to be played but bop the christian lobby has to protect us from zombie boies laying around but not killing unbaptised children

I think AWarGuy nailed it. We live in an age where we have access to whatever media we want. Want a DVD-quality copy of Star Trek without paying? No problem. Chinese Democracy? Gimme 20 minutes. Some German wench shagging her Dalmatian? Easy as pie.*

(*pie is good. I like pie)

The clowns arrayed against this have no idea. NO IDEA. What, do they think they can turn away ships at port? Smooth those doilies, granny, and drag your arse into the 21st Century. Not only are you confused about what the target demographic is, you're confused about what a R18+ rating does.

It doesn't stop Bart Simpson from getting into the movies. Bart doesn't do that anymore. It DOES give his folks a guide as to whether they should allow and/or guide him when he visits the Playstation Store (online, in case you didn't catch that, Esther).

Bart will have what he wants, whether Conroy or Atkinson want it or not. Bart knows infinite fuckloads more than both of them about proxy servers and anonymous routing. Denying an R18+ rating in Oz doesn't slow Bart down, it does exactly the opposite, by ensuring his acquiring of Zombie Hooker Apocalypse IV is both clandestine and illegal.

Bart is so far beyond having to be a part of the system it's not funny. They should be enticing him in, rather than making sure he stays out.
