What was an annoying tropical storm twirled itself, in a matter of hours, into the strongest typhoon to hit Hong Kong in 30 years.
The city battens down the hatches when a No. 8 signal* goes up but still people were out and about, getting themselves injured by flying debris. Trees are down all over the place. Some have been snapped in half. Severe case of sleep deprivation here, despite the two-hour lie in. * Typhoon/Strong Gale Signals: 1, 3, 8 (w/direction), 9 and 10.

I'm all good, apart from the lack of sleep. I live in a fairly exposed area and the wind really howls around the building. That and the rain.
Colleagues are slowly coming into work; seems the main road the buses take to the campus is blocked by a fallen tree. The workers were busy clearing the roads this morning but it will take some time. We're fortunate to live somewhere that can cope with these storms so we can generally just ride them out. Mainland China I'm sure is still getting battered and will have massive flooding.

Oops! That should be strongest for 13, not 30, years.
Sucks having a typhoon and not get a day off. Still the season is far from over. ![]() Years ago, I worked with a new arrival from Florida. He couldn't believe that we ride out typhoons here because in his home state they evacuate when there are hurricanes. Now while hurricanes can be much stronger than typhoons, we didn't/don't have anywhere to evacuate (nor most people the means) so buildings here are built to withstand the winds. The really tall ones sway!

I would not want to live there. Still, it sounds like a good place to sell some Feng shui! I guess I should not be flippant-all those people on junks and in villages must have a really bad time.
