Ah Pensioner, glad to know some of the family drew the long straw! ;-)

Mum & I have spent 8 years on our family tree, intensely for the last 2 since foreign electronic records became broadly accessible. We've cracked a few family mysteries (one I'll link to when I'm not mobile) & added nearly 2000 people to our tree. It's insanely addictive research & often intensely emotional. We love it!

Mum has spent a bit on hers.....nan spent a bit on the other side of family. Here are some interesting things we found.....

- Great grandma lied about her age from mid-age onwards
- Great grandad was a gigolo
- Great Great Great Uncle was actually a world record long distance runner (must be where I got it from LOL...)
- Someone on mum's side was born on the ship coming over here
- I had a great great uncle who was apparently an official in the Soviet Communist Party
- Mum googled her maiden name and all she got were Jews. Ergo I have every right to call people a shmuck or a schlemile LOL.....

Gruber, I had already decided that I liked your mum lots..

It's now rather romantic to discover your ancestors being sent to the colonies for stealing a loaf of bread, so it was a bit confronting to find I had an ancestor who came out to WA as a convict for stabbing someone with a knife. He gave his occupation as "table knife grinder".
On the other side of the family I had a pensioner guard come out to supervise the convicts on the ship. Wasn't the same ship as the convict ancestor, or it would have been a nice symmetry.

I've gotten a little cynical tho about lineages and actual parentage vs purported, and I think I will wait til we can dig up the bones and test for DNA before I spend time and money tracing back very far.

Ooh, yeah. Been there. We have a book on the male line of our family in the National Library. Why? Because someone could afford to research it and publish it (never offered for sale). Content? Trivial. Seriously, I have never managed to read it even though I have an interest in one or two of the characters and I contributed research.

Our (me and spouse) view of genealogy is to find something interesting to do.

I've been researching my family tree for nearly 20 years. I am officially obsessed - just ask my husband and son, they'll tell you!

I have 3 convict ancestors, sadly no first fleeters.

A family reunion for my largest Australian branch was held in 2001 and we're doing it again in 2013. Back then we had traced about 17,000 descendants, now it's nearly 45,000.

On my Mum's side I have a possible link to royalty, if true the Queen and I are 13th cousins 3 times removed. I'm expecting my invitation to high tea anyday now.

If anyone would like any tips, advice, help, just ask.
